You can use a range of motors from 5hp electric to 10 - 13 hp gas. Depends more your output requirements. Need lots of air, turn fast, not so much as small shop, turn slower. Just watch min and max rpm and direction. Adjust load on the motor with pulley size. Lots of information about this pump at www.grainger.com and also at www.northern.com. I have a Quincy 325 running at only 500 rpm with 5hp motor gives me plenty of air but could use larger motor and turn maybe 900 rpm for super quick shut off (seems like a waste for me). Good luck with your project.
Check your ignition components for condensation. If you wash the bike using water especially around the motor, you should promptly dry it thoroughly before starting it to avoid the possibility of condensation caused shorts in the ignition system. I personally use a leaf blower to dry mine and let it sit in the sun for a while to make sure it's dry. I think you will find condensation is your problem. Good luck and safe riding.
