First clean the inside of the printer as there might be tiny strips of paper that cling to the print head assembly, second open the scanning area and clean the camera as tiny lines came from dust that was being read by the camera as an image.

SOURCE: Black lines down page

It must be the black pcu , the cleaning blade picks up dirt and causes these lines , it can also be the black developer giving you trouble , if you want be very carefull aand strip the pcu open you will see the lines only on the inside and not from outside , then you will know if it is developer or the cleaning blade

SOURCE: Black Lines running down the right side outside of the print area

It may be the fuser. Take it out and inspect the roller on it:

  1. Switch off the device, disconnect the mains plug and wait for 30 minutes before continuing.
  2. Ensure that the bypass tray is closed, or you will not be able to open the front cover.
  3. Open the front cover by pressing the release buttons as shown.
  4. Pull the front cover down towards you.
  5. Disconnect the green plug - squeeze the sides of the plug and pull.
  6. Push the left and right levers outward to unlock the unit.
  7. Pull the unit towards you as shown and lift it clear of the device.
  8. Check the roller for wear marks, If so replace it.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

sound like the drum could be the problem have you replaced that? if the fuser was the problem it would have the toner but would not have been fused or had marks on the page. this would be my best on this issue

SOURCE: HP Officejet J5780 All-in-one Injet prints a grey

lift the feed area and look at the small glass plate where the auto feed paper is actually scanned. That needs a good cleaning. Since the paper runs across it even a tiny little obstruction such as paper left from a paper jam or a dot of ink from that pen you used to unstick that last paper jam (maybe its just me??). That one dot turns into a line when the paper rolls across it. Clean well and the line will dissappear.

Thick black vertical line appears on the right hand side of the page

PLACE A PLAIN PIECE OF WHITE PAPER IN MACHINE AND TAKE A COPY. IF NO LINES ARE ON IT THEN THE LINES ARE COMING FROM THE MACHINE THAT IS SENDING TO YOU BUT IF U DO HAVE THE LINES THEN PRINT HEAD IS PROBABLY FAULTY OR DIRTY.

Which side goes up with Canon fax - L220? Thanks

Get a piece of paper, and put a different BIG mark on each side of the paper, big and bold, then run it through, and see which "Side" comes out, and that's your answer. Just press "Copy" to see. Or you could even send a Fax to yourself, and see. Also to help, your manual is below, that too will show you.

I get lines and can't read the right side of copies that I make with the 1270e. How do I fix this?

You have not specified why you can't read the right side of copies and I am assuming that the reason is because the 'lines' are covering the text. I can offer a solution to the lines issue.

Most likely a fax has been sent or a page copied with 'white out' (Liquid Paper), still wet on the page. As the page feeds over the scanner, (a narrow strip of glass that runs across the width of the page along the feed path) the wet liquid paper comes off on the glass as a thin line and dries. Thereafter, when copying, scanning or sending a fax, the scanner light does not go through the liquid paper streak and the result when printed is a thin vertical line that runs the full length of the page. If this is the cause you will also find that faxes you send to other people will also have this line (although faxes you receive are not affected by this problem with your machine).

To fix the problem: follow the path that the paper travels when sending a fax or making a copy, until you find the scanner (narrow glass strip). Take a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit (or white spirit) and remove the now dried Liquid Paper from the glass. Clean the whole strip ensuring that the glass is left clean and dry.

Colr prints showing plenty of lines

Here's a solution from Canon USA:

Issue: Banded or streaked prints
Solution: Print Head Alignment MP530

Perform Print Head Alignment Instructions to perform a Print Head Alignment directly from the machine. If diagrams or ruled lines are misaligned, print head alignment is required. The print head alignment can be performed automatically or manually. If the automatic print head alignment does not work, adjust the print head manually. Automatic Print Head Alignment
  1. Press <ON/OFF> to turn on the machine.

  2. Load a few sheets of letter-sized plain paper in the auto sheet feeder.

  3. Press the Open button to open the Paper Output Tray. Then open up and set the extension by pressing down the hollow on the front side.

  4. Execute automatic print head alignment.
    1. Press <COPY> button.
    2. Press <Menu> repeatedly to select [MAINTENACE].
    3. Press the left or right cursor to select [AUTO HEAD ALIGN], then press the <OK>. (A pattern is printed and the print head is automatically aligned. It takes about five minutes to finish printing the pattern.)

Manual print head alignment
  1. Press <ON/OFF> to turn on the machine.

  2. Load two sheets of Letter-sized plain paper in the auto sheet feeder or cassette.

  3. Ensure that the proper paper source is selected.

  4. Execute manual print head alignment.
    1. Press <Menu> repeatedly to select [MAINTENACE].
    2. Press the left or right cursor to select [ALIGN PRINT HEAD], then press the <OK>. (The nozzle check pattern is printed.)

  5. Check the printed patterns and use the left or right arrow to input the number of the pattern in column A that has the least noticeable streaks.

  6. Press <OK> to move the cursor to column B, and then use the left or right arrow to input the number of the pattern that has the least noticeable streaks.

  7. Repeat the procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for column P.

    mp500_align_from_unit_1.jpg

  8. When you have finished inputting all pattern numbers, press <OK>.

Note: For columns A through N select the patterns with the least visible vertical streaks. For columns O and P select the patterns with the fewest visible horizontal streaks.

2 inch vertical solid band on right side when making a copy

There is probably dirt or ink on the scanner glass, this would affect both copying and sending faxes.

Here is a link to the manual and a description on page 74 showing how to clean the glass.
