Slim ps2 1 of our older games loads in the beginning but then quits, a game we just recently bought gives disc read error, we tried them in my daughters, the first one plays but freezes in mine, the 2nd one gives disc read error in hers to. The fan works, the game spins, and we cleaned the lens. Any suggestions.

How do I fix PS2 Disc Read Error?

It could be the fact that your PS 2 console is very old then now and the mechanics and the parts inside of the console are starting to wear out and are no longer working anymore. You could buy a new one from JJ games and Lukie Games and Eadt Starland games and DkOldies.

Disc Read Error

If a dual layer disc is not functioning, there is a problem with your laser. This is a frequent issue with Playstation 2 consoles. As a laser starts to fail, the first type of disc to stop reading is the dual layer disc. Eventually regular DVDs will start skipping in the middle of the game and loading times will increase. Eventually it will stop reading DVDs as well. The solution is a replacement laser. You can find one at the following website for $30 including shipping:

Gta san andreas loads but then says error reading disc

if you are using the older style ps2 fat one then its probly that the disc might either be scratched a bit and almost outta date as a older ps2 gets used it will begin to have disc reading errors what i did was upgrade to the slim they have less problems with disck reading erros over time id do one of two things or both take the disc to someone or a place to have it professionly cleaned for at most 3 bucks then try it then if not try leaning your ps2 upright and incert the disc some times doing that will make the laser not hickup and read it better with the motor running sideways keepng it from skipping . if it dosnt help much im sorry but its always a good try ;)

Guitar Hero World Tour PS2

If you have old ps2(fat one) or some of the older slim models they are unable to read the new dual layer discs like GHWT. You can send your ps2 back to sony to reformat it to be able to read these new discs for about $50. There is currently a class action lawsuit against sony and activision for not being upfront about this problem.

Disc error issues with PlayStation 2 slim

Hi eetsbeets,

It is not a problem leaving your Slim turned on, it is mainly leaving a disc that is unreadable in the Slim for long times that melts the laser.  So it is best if you find that your getting disc read error not to allow the laser to try reading it for hours needlessly.

I think I got an email or phone call from  you about repairing this slim for you.  I have ordered a power switch, and have lasers on hand. The cost for Repair and return shipping if I change the laser, and the reset/power button card, will be $39..  Contact me at [email protected]

If you can do it yourself, you can get the power/reset button and LAser replacements on Ebay. I suggest not to resolder the swtich on as a new one is not that expensive.

Read Error (With FFX game)

Hi Raven, Its sounds like you have a PS2 Slim with a melted Laser. What you will find is that the Slim will only read CD's, CDR's, PS1 Games, Blue back PS2 games and DVD's. I can repair this for $35 plus shipping to and from The Playstation Clinic in Fountain Inn, SC. The webpage is www.playstationclinic.com If you do not have a Slim, you either have dirty disc, or Lens. You may have left some fibers from the Q-tip across or around the lens.
