I just spoke with Canon because I had the same problem... and I was told that "BUSY" displays because the camera is busy restoring those items that can be restored to the original factory settings through the RESET ALL menu option! And therein can lie your problem... there are several items that cannot be restored through the RESET ALL menu option. Check your Advanced Camera User Guide it will tell you all the original menu settings. Those items that have not reverted to the factory or original setting must be changed manually. If you are having trouble with that then contact

Give the camera some time. Don't remove the battery till the reset is done. I hope your battery was charged before you started the reset.
If the battery runs out of power, you must charge it comlpete, before putting it in again. I hope the reset went well. If not only try a reset with a fully charged battery.

Take a picture and download it to your computer. If the picture also shows up as black then your camera probably has a defective CCD imager. The best thing to do is to first try restarting the camera. Do not push or pull on the lens as this will often cause other issues. Do not blow air in the lens as this generally moves any dirt or dust to the back and it sits on your imaging sensor, you'll end up with poor photos after that. The best thing to do is to have it serviced so it is fixed correctly and working the way it should be. The site that is great for the Powershot Models is: www.CamerasAndParts.com They only specialize in these Powershots and they have your exact lens error problem right on the site. Try them for help. They tend to be the best deal plus they're service is wonderful. You'll pay $89 for the repair, all of the service for that model and the return shipping back to you included with them. Issue: How do I reset the camera to its default settings?
Solution: Procedure for resetting the camera to default PowerShot S400, S410, and S500

Resetting the Settings to Default You can reset all of the menu and button operation settings to default except for [Date/Time], [Language], and [Video System].
1. Turn on the camera.
The mode dial can be turned to any setting.
2. Press and hold the <MENU> button for longer than 5 seconds.

The message Reset settings to default? appears on the LCD monitor.

3. Select [OK] using the

buttons, then press the <SET> button.

The screen below appears while resetting. The normal screen resumes when resetting is complete.
To cancel resetting, select [Cancel] instead of [OK].

The custom white balance is not cancelled even if settings are reset to default settings.

My Canon PowerShot not recording audio

Try to reset the camera to default settings.... go to the menu and look for the reset default on the menu...that should override any accidental settings or mutings and get you back if the microphone is still functioning..

The busy sign generally comes when:
Image is being recorded to the memory card, or playback mode is starting up.

It possible your memory card is full, please therefore down load your pictures and try again after erasing and reformating the memory card..
Alternatvely, please also reset all the camera ands menu settings to default.

What do pictures taken at night/poor light look like ?? if they are an improvment ,
your Exposure/Auto-Light/White Balance settings may be horribly configured.

Firstly I'd try Resetting the camera to default settings by using the settings menu .
>Menu >Settings >Reset default settings

This should eliminate poor settings as a suspect for the problem.
