it works fine if I use the viewfinder, I can record, playback, play the tape on the TV but as soon as I opened the LCD door it has no power or anything on the display not even backlight and the viewfinder goes black also
if I close the door the viewfinder works OK
I can use the camera but it would be nice to have the LCD display No I tried that already

To my understanding that you do not see live view in camera mode to record and camcorder playback old recorded tapes correctly and you get picture in LCD. If it is true then please check lens cover that need to be slide down to get live view in camera mode. If problem still exist then 2 possibilities, either aperture in lens mechanism is bad or ccd imager is defective. In that problem, camcorder needs qualified tech to fix it. Let me know any further query.
I have the same problem I did not open the camera yet to fix the issue but after gently hitting the camera lens i came to this resolution
Go head and turn on the camera in the recording mode. With 2 fingers squeeze of the camera where the lens sticks out. Right by the switch between close shooting and far shooting. Now squeeze the lens really tight, try it in that same area and the lens should make the connection to the LCD screen. I had this problem after 1st month of my purchase, if you can give back the camera and get a new one or another brand. If not these instructions do work for me so I hope it works for you [email protected] Thanx
The camera is fine. Since it is an Single Lens Reflex (SLR), it is not possible to use the LCD screen to compose your pictures. Canon answers that here: CanonUSA
at the back of the camera next to the view finder (bottom right hand corner) is a button and icon marked SEL.
pressing this button toggles the lens image from the view finder to the lcd screen and back again.
IF neither view is available then I suspect your camera needs some TLC at a repair shop.
hope this helps.
