Cleaning is a good first step, however, the surface of the objective lens is not the only thing that gets dirty. The bottom of the objective lens gets a fair amount of gunk also, and that needs to be addressed. Never mind the half mirror, which suffers from the same malady. If your laser is still functioning, and you want to try this yourself, just remember to "count the turns" on any screws or other adjusements that you my disturb. A 'scope is really nice to tweak the final adjustment, but is not always necessary. Just be sure that the laser isn't on its last leads (joke) as the power will continue to rise to compensate for crud on any optic surface, and result in laser death.
It all depends on what model PS2 you have. Please indicate the SCPH number and I will reply with a solution.
Ok , what you need is a new laser. The 7000 series lasers lens are now made of a light plastic. A way for Sony to save money on Raw materials and shipping costs. What happens is your disc gets sort of dirty and the laser keeps working and owrking to read the dirty part. Eventualy enough heat builds up the the laser actually begins to melt. I run the Playstation Clinic and repair PS2 slims with the same problem as yours. All I can do is replace the laser. You can do it yourself by getting a PS2 slim lens from www.repairmyvideogame.com for about $15 or send your slim to me and I will get the laser lens and replace it for you for $35 plus shipping. I am at www.playstationclinic.com
