You did not mention the model number, by our experience, the problem is a defective T-CON board.

Go in and adjust the vertical / horizontal screen settings until it disapears

Your video card has fried unfortunately. If you are familiar with the internal workings of a PC you can open it up and check the power cells on the video card itself, they will usually show signs of damage such as cracking etc. I would have a qualified professional take a look at it. I would recommend www.tigerdirect.com as a starting place for finding a new one

Move the screen around while on, do the lines disappear when you hold it in certain positions? If so, your LCD needs to be replace. If the lines don't disappear when bending the screen, it could be a broken motherboard as well. Youcan try to open the laptop and check the dc connection. first try to reset the settings to factory default. if that doesn't work, you have a main board issue.

if its coloured lines then its the bottom screen at fault.

you may have a slightly damaged power supply...although swapping the main supply chassis may solve, I have seen front panels that have an additional supply section. look on the front panel board for any TP's and probe with an O-scope. if you see a TP that may also show (+ xx V), where xx is a numerical value-may be one x only, the scope must show a straight horizontal line that is shifted vertically away from its normal (ground) position. that confirms a DC value present. then determine the DC value of the shift. Another possibility, since you invested, is to search ebay for a second unit for part swapping. look for as-is units.
