You need to close all open programs and reboot before you defrag
if you want a clean reboot go to start remove all programs from the startup file so nothing is in the background, if McAfee is in your start up file, it will prevent you from a complete defrag
start/all programs/startup click and drag each file in the startup back to all programs and then do a new reboot

you might have to install more RAM random access memory to check how much ram you have
to check the details on your computer
click start right click on my computer select properties you will see all imformation about your computer including installed ram

scroll to the bottom toolbar (bottom of screen) right click you can select task manager applications also processes you will see whats running on your computer if you see something running that you don't need running select end now then you might uninstall that particular program you might have virus slowing your computer also select users you will see who is using your computer

HARD DISK MAINTENANCE To remove redundant and temporary files, recover hard disk...

HARD DISK MAINTENANCE
To remove redundant and temporary files, recover hard disk space and speed up hard disk access, then hard disk maintenance should be done at least once a month.
Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too.
Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter – click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse (can skip this) - then click Defragment.
When this is completed repeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive.
Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially if these tasks have not been for a long time.
DO NOT STOP THESE PROCESSES, LET THE COMPUTER COMPLETE THESE TASKS.
Next time when you run Disk Cleanup and Defrag to won't take as long.

I have been working on Excel file which has many links. This file for saving takes 7 to 10 hrs per day. Is there any way to resolve this problem

1 possible resolution that I could think of for your problem is to perform disk defragmentation.

You can access the program by following the steps below:

- click start go to all programs
- click accessories > system tools > disk defragmenter
- select desired drive
- click defragment button

NOTE: process may take longer depends on your computer.

Cheers.

I have a WD160 GB and I keep getting an error that I need to upgrade the bios to install win xp sp 2

Please use defragmenter to examine your harddrive. If your drive detected on your CMOS system that's possible having a bad cluster. In accessing the defragmetation goto Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter. Then select the the volume of drive you want to defrag and click defragment. Wait until processing done. Defragmenter is working automatically to fix any bad sector found in your hardware so there is no problem how to fix it.

Hope this will be helpful to you, rate me SOLVED!
