LiftMaster model 976M occasionally opens 1/4 of the way and then comes to a stop. If you hit the open/close button on the wall it continues to open and then closes fine. Doesn't happen all the time. Hardware has not been cleaned or llubricated in a 20 years. Is the motor designed to stop if it meets to much resistance opening the door?

The sensor eye - or more likely, the other end, the sensor light - probably got knocked out of alignment. The eye should have an LED on it - possibly one that glows green when it's ready to close or red when it's obstructed or out of alignment. Try adjusting the light until the LED on the receiver glows green.

is chain moving. if not, gears are shot. if moving, is trolley connected.

SOURCE: Craftsman Garage Opener Clicks only and LED blinking 5 times

first off, hitting extra button on remote would not do anything. Is door up or down/ where is trolley that attaches to chain, by door or motor. Is is jamned against a bolt. Try a paper clip and jump from white to read terminal. Does it work. Does light bulb blink 10 times. I ignore the diagnostic lights and go by symptons. Give more info.

If you are sure the battery is good you have a bad keypad. The signal strength is so weak it will not penetrate the door.

Check the door springs. You may have a broken one. You should also remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor.
