Sounds cut out, games won't save, PS3 won't turn off
So I think my PS3 is on the fritz...and I can't find any other examples of people having this issue.
When I was playing MLB the Show....after 30 mins or so of playing, all the sounds cut out except the ball getting hit. At this point, if I try to save or quit, the game locks up. Thinking it was the game, I put COD 4 in...and the same thing happened. After about 10 mins...almost all of the sounds cut out, and when I tried to exit the game, it locked up.
Here's what I'm noticing:
- I can't save any games
- Most sounds in any game cuts out after a few minutes
- System will not turn off, I have to hit the power button and hold down the eject button to get system to turn off
- System is locking up
I'm having the same issue. I was playing call of duty:world at war and after about twenty minutes of playing online matches, it would freeze up during the load screen. I had to manually turn it off, and when I turn it back on, it won't recognize the disc. It does it with any game. I tried restoring the system defaults, which took 8 hours and erased all my saved data, and that didn't do anything. Anybody have any ideas?I'm having the same issue. Yikes!! I'd have to agree with you that the system is on the fritz, I suggest that you send it to a professional system repair service. (I can't suggest any off the top of my head, I used to know the number for one but I forgot it.)

There's a switch in the back, the only benefit of using the power button is that it can be turned back on with the controller. Don't use the switch when your game is saving or anything is downloading because you could corrupt the saved game/download (I don't think it'll let you turn it off from the front button when it's writing to the hard drive- the switch in the back actually cuts off the power.), also note that When the power status light flashes red after using the PS3 system for 3 or more minutes and shuts off, the PS3 system has possibly over heated. This may be caused by poor ventilation or the vents may be blocked."
"If this happens: Check to see if the vents are blocked. If the vents are dusty, vacuum the vents to remove the dust. If the PS3 system is in an enclosed area like a bookshelf or entertainment center, move it to a more open area. Leave the PS3 system off for 30 minutes to let it cool down. If you continue to have issues, you will have to send the system in for service." I hope this will help in solving the problem....
Sounds like your system has a failure in it, that needs professional assistance. If you want your data saved you should try a place called www.videogame911.com. They do fast repairs and can save your data.
Quickest way is to put all gamesaves on a flash drive, most files will not take up a lot of space. Your profile can be retrieved through Playstation Network and all game updates and DLC can be redownloaded. Recommend that you also save your save files to your PC, to insure that you have all of them backed up in case you have any other catastrophic issues. Also, depending on the reason your ps3 is crashing, you can remove your hard drive from dying PS3 and place in current PS3 as well. There are several forums and videos on how to do this on the net. But make backup of game saves first! Hope this helps.

Re: PS3 turns off alone and red light keep flashing You officially have YLOD or "yellow light of death". I have had it twice.. I also wanted my data.. so I researched.. no matter what you do.. if you send it to sony its gone.. it cant be recovered outside of the ps3 or in a different one. I know a guy who will repair your ps3 leaving all your data intact for 80 dolllars.. he sells his service on ebay and if it breaks again within three months just ship it back to him and he'll fix it for free. If you want to know just PM me
Clean out the vents with vaccuum cleaner. If symptoms persist, call Sony.
