I have a eMachine t5246. My hard drive went bad, very bad, couldn't get it to even get wiped out so. my eMachine disc won't start up. It is the operating disc but every time it says install and...

If the hard drive failed you will first need to replace it with a working hard drive. One that is done, power on the computer with the recovery disc is the drive and enter setup. It should say something like press F9 or F10 for Setup. Look through the menus for "Boot Order", make sure your CD/DVD drive is above hard drive. Save the changes and reboot, you should get a message "Press any key to boot to disc" or something similar, do so, and follow the prompts to re-install windows.

System recovery on a gateway 6214 laptop

Try This:
    • 1 Back-up any important files to an external hard drive, if at all possible, before proceeding.
    • 2 Place the Windows Install CD into the computer's optical drive. Restart the computer with the disc inside. As the computer starts up, it will prompt you to press any key to boot into the Windows Install CD, press any key to do so
    • 3
Press "Enter" to bypass the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press "F8" to accept the Windows License Agreement. Windows Setup will ask if you'd like to install any available updates to the operating system. If you currently have a (wired) Internet connection, download the updates. If you do not, you can install the updates after the restore completes.
    • 4 Select the "Custom" installation route. Select the internal hard drive as the installation destination. Press "D" to delete any and all data on the hard drive. Confirm this action by pressing "L". Press "C" to create a new partition to install Windows. You will need to use the "NTFS" file system, as this is the Windows default.
    • 5 Continue the installation by following any on-screen instructions. You will be asked for the Product Key, your region/time zone and to create a name for the computer. The whole re-installation, reformat and restore process will take a little over an hour. Once complete, the computer will reboot to apply the finishing touches. Remove the Windows Install CD at this point to avoid booting back into the disc. The Gateway laptop will launch into a freshly restored Windows installation.

Operting system failed

Plug the hard drive into another computer and insert the disc in the other and do the process on that computer but when the process is done, plug the hard drive back in the original pc. CAUTION: Pay attention to the hard drive letter you install on, you might accidentally install on the main one for that computer.

My lexmark x2670 prints copys but it will not scan a document ocr it scans but will not process it .,then tells me it needs a program that has been deleated or lost i am using vista 32bit noel

You will need to update the printer software installed on your computer to install the OCR scan software. The Lexmark OCR scan software is available only on the installation disc that came with your printer. Just re-insert the install disc into the computer hard drive and run the installation setup.
If you lost the disc, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for assistance.

My BD HP20 will not play most new Blu Ray disc. I understand it needs to be updated. Is there some thing I can buy to do the update ?

You need a USB flash drive (FAT format); in my experience even less than 1G drives are sufficient. Download the firmware update to your computer from the site:
(You'll need to fill in the drop down menus) The file is a .zip and must be extracted to the root directory of the USB drive. Then safely eject the drive from the computer (to ensure that the write step is finished). Plug the drive into the player (port marked Service) and go through the setup menus. Setup > Settings > Software Update (you need a password so it will ask you for one if not already set). Click Enter and the file on the drive will be compared to the current installed firmware. Then press Yes to install and wait for it to finish. If errors occur try removing and reinserting the drive. When done, remove the flash drive.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(some TV repair shops may have the flash drives available but you'd probably have to pay for a service call to get a technician and the drive.)

Won't boot, dvd drive only shows yellow light on

After a Format EVERYTHING is GONE... It is a blank thing. It only know to boot from an install disc. So you must now put a Windows DVD or some sort of Boot setup Disc in, and if the Windows disc, you should perform a re-install of the Operating System. As until that is done you cannot use the PC, as a PC. try that and get back to me.

Firmware updates

Hello there:
i would suggest to go to the toshiba website or the maker of the drive and search for the updates from there if nothing is found
download radarsync free versioon and run the free scan and upon the results of the scan you will see the device that you are needing the update for now just select details now look above this and you will see history and it will show you the current version available
now just select the operating system that you are using and select download or install update it may ask you if you want to create a restore point this is up to you next after this is done than there will be a setup program that is showing or a link to it go to it and select the setup and it wil install from there , ok?
not too hard seems like a lot of things to do but is not really too hard
hopethat this is verry helpfull
best regards michael

I have a insperion 8100 laptop, I replaced the 20 gig hard drive with a new 100 gig drive. my bios is the latest update A15. It wont reconize the new hard drive, F1 and F2 will give me the same info no...

Sounds like the new drive is not "Initialized" The drive should have come with software that initializes and formats the new drive. After installing the new drive, boot the computer with the included software disc. Seagate and western digital have software that comes with their drives. If that is not possible, the other way is attach the drive to another computer, access the control panel > Administration tools > computer management > scroll down left pane and select "disc management" > this pane will show all hard drives on your system, including the new one. If the new drive does not show a partition in the right pane, then you have to RIGHT click on the name of the drive, which is the small tan box to the left of where the partition would be and select "Initialize" this is done immediately and is active waiting. Disconnect the drive and re-install in the laptop.
