Sorry about your Admin.  With Cisco this is NOT an easy task.  Did the admin have ANY documentation on the network?  Do you have VLAN's? The IP's are set by the Admin after he figures out what is next in line for the configuration HE setup.  If its setup DHCP, that means a server will figure the IP for you, but for that to work it has to already be setup across your network.  Go into the cisco router already setup and see whats going on there.  To get in you will need passwords probably 4 if setup in a typical Cisco manner. go to this link it will help you get started:
be careful what you undo, you can bring down part or all the network or the internet connections.
now you know why cisco people get payed the big bucks...good luck to you

With my Linksys WRT54G2 v1 router, when I try to enter my username and password to access the router, nothing happens. The text I entered disappears and tells me the same as before, to enter the username...

Look at the back of the router for Reset button and reset your router to restore factory settings. Turn over router and check in the bottom default access IP address and then type that IP address in to your browser. Then it shall ask you for ID and password. Enter `Admin` or `admin` as ID and `Password` or `password` as password. You will see a web based setup opened in front of you. Go to the Wireless Lan settings and then you will SSID so change the SSID and this would be your network`s name. Then go to subsection security and select WPA2-PSK or simple WPA-PSK then enter your desired network key. Once done with all these things the click apply and reboot if prompted. Good Luck

One static IP has internet. how on a LAN?

You need two network adopters in your system.
Connect Internet connection in first Network card and from the other network card give it to your Switch or hub
If you are using XP system you can use Internet connection sharing to share the internet in your LAN systems.
Follow the steps to enable using ICS

1.Enable Internet Connection sharing in the LAN properties in the first network card.
2.Now your second network card automatically get an IP address in the range of 192.168.*.* series
3.Connect other systems in the LAN and make sure the system has selected Optain IP atomatically from DHCP.

You are all set.

There is also an advanced way to setup this .
Install IPCOP firewall in a system with two network cards and u can share the internet with the firewall settings

My wireless modem doesn't appear on 'connect to a network'

You may have to configure the router and change some wireless settings to get it to work, goto the router configuration page, (run ipconfig /all, at a command prompt, to get the "ip address" for the rotuer config page, I believe it is the"Default Gateway" that you would enter in the address bar of IE to get to the page, (the pass will be user:Admin, Pass:Admin, orPass, or Password, or 12345 on some older ones) then click on the wireless menu's from the left.
I hope this helps, if so please give a fixya rating if it solves/helps solve your problem.
P.S. The router itself may be broken, and LAN may still work while WAN will be not working, usually buy a new router.

Hi there
It could be a simple matter of bad drivers, go to the motherboard manufacturers website look for your model mobo and download the lan/network driver.
Then go to device manager and uninstall the lan, reboot the pc and reinstall the drivers you just downloaded

post back if any more problems

Good luck
