I have a yamaha RX-592 that needs to be connected to a Dish VIP722 DVR. Also a Sony DVD player. The dish box has no outlet for cable to tv, so the tech. ran form the dish receiver to the tv. He had no idea on how to connect the AV receiver and DVD player in the system. It was all working on cable and now no surroundsound or DVD.
Your DVD player should connect to your TV, not the DISH DVR. Is the Yamaha some sort of receiver or something similar? If so, it should plug into the TV as well. The DVR just provides a signal to your TV, just like the other two components. On the back of your TV there should be other connections to plug into like HDMI1, HDMI2, AUX1, etc. You select which input you want to view using your TV remote. For example, if you were watching a DVD, you turn on the DVD player. Say it was plugged into AV1 or something similar on the back of the TV. With your TV remote, select which input you are using...that way your TV receives the signal from your DVD player and nothing else.

don't run you video from the projector to the reciever. just run it to the dvd and run the sound from the dvd through the reciever

Have a Vip-722 Dish HD receiver with a Sony receiver w/0 HDMI input and use the optical for audio for the 5.1. Using the HDMI and digital optical at the same time works fine for me.

I have similar situation with my TXDS 565 and could not video out of my unit after hooking up the cables properly in and out of the unit for all auxilary modules... I assume that you have tried to place your vid IN from the cable box to your units vid IN and run a vid OUT cable or S cable to your TV. If this doesn't work for you as it did not for me, then you must run your cable direct to the TV vid IN and run your audio out from the TV audio Out back to your reciever as audio IN in the Video I or II ports on the reciever unit. This will give you audio control through the rec. unit.
I suspect that my is damaged and will not function properly; yours may be too,
My unit is about 10 years old and repair is too expensive so I will run it this way until something else fails and I will replace it... probably not Onkyo.,'
Let me know if I clearify any of this.
