When it asks for your password DO NOT enter a password...hit select button. The screen will read delete password. This is where you enter 7444. It has worked on all 4 of my Playstations, and I got the information from Sony customer service.
Put a DVD into the PS2 and let it try to load. When the screen says chenge to level four select yes. When the entry window pops up,press the select button on the controller. It should say reset password or something like that. Put in 7444. Then when you rename the password put in 0000. You will have to do it again 0000.
Once the movie starts, not the menu screen, but the movie actually playing, Press Select button again. The PS2 DVD menu should appear. Cursor over to the toolbox or Setup, and press X. Cursor over to the third icon, and press X. Arrow down to PArental and press X. Change the Parental lockout to OFF.
I am not completely sure about the procedure here but the numbers are correct.
Umm..this factory password DID NOT work for mine...
Put in a DVD, and press select button to go to PS2 DVD menu. highlight setup menu. Press X. go to settings I think, and paretal control is there. Use password 7444. Usually everyone sets the password to 0000. Then when you go into the parental settings, turn the level value to OFF
Someone gave me a Does not help vote on this. "basically the information you need to set parent level is here. I may be wrong about exactly which menu puts you on Parent level settings. I do nt keep it in my front line memory and for a free tip, I donot plan on hooking up my PS2 to get the exact route. The factory password 7444 Works every time for PS2 parent level. i am little ticked that someone thought what I posted did not help. Â Â

Here is the procedure to reset the parental lock code:
1. Bring up a screen where the unit asks you to enter in the parental
code. You can either insert a restricted disc, or enter the DVD setup
menu and go to "parental control" under custom setup.
2. When the screen asks for the code, press the SELECT button, then enter in the code "7444".
3. The level adjustment under Parental Control dictates the strictness
of the player. The lower the value, the more strict it will be. Either
increase the value to lower the restriction, or disable the lock
entirely by setting it to "off".
4. Once you have made your adjustments, be sure that the DVD tray is
empty, and press the RESET button on the front of the Playstation 2. It
is imperative the tray is clear of any DVD or game for the unit to save
your settings.
If this does not work, the other code is usually 0000. However if they change the default password, then it will be hard to find out.

Just go into your settings and select parental controls. You will have to insert the password and then you should be able to change the setting no problem.
