Re: side by side..fridge is freezing up while freezer...
Your baffle that controls the freezer temperature is possibly broken. If you take the cover off the dials labeled "refrigerator/freezer" the baffle is a plastic arm that controls the amount of air circulation between the freezer and the refigerator. If the arm is broken is will stay closed completely blocking the air hole or vent. I just wedged a small piece of wood or shim in mine and it hasn't frozen up since.
Good Luck. I know how frustrating it can be to repeatedly defrost the ice build-up.

Keep 3 to 5 degree temp setting. And check defrost cycling is properly done. Due to frosting formed behind the freezer could restrict the function freezer fan which throw freeze air to refrigerant compartment. Unplug fridge till defrosting all frosting, and then plug it again. Thanks.
THERMOSTAT ON 90% OF SIDE/SIDE REFRIGERATOR IS LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THE FRIG COMPARTMENT .YOU KNOW, THE ONE THAT HAS OFF ON IT AND USUALLY NUMBERS. YOU WILL HAVE TO DROP THE PANEL TO ACCESS THE THERMOSTAT. ALSO NOTE THAT AN INDICATION OF A STUCK THERMOSTAT IS WHEN THE COMPRESSOR RUNS AND RUNS AND DOESN'T SHUT OFF.ALSO CHECK FREEZER TEMP TO SEE IF IT IS BELOW 0 DEGREES THAT ALSO INDICATES STUCK THERMOSTAT.
Try pouring some boiling hot water down the drain. If anything blocks the drain even slightly it will slow down the water and then freeze it. Air temp in the freezer is 0 degrees or close to that. That small of a hole it freezes quick. I'm not sure of the style of fridge this is. Side by side or top mount freezer. You are able to get to all drain pipes. If not boiling water. A hand steamer works great too.
I have a gsl25jfpe bs ge regrigerator and the baffle motor that controls air flow from the freezer to the refrigerator is out. This had been causing everthing in the fridge to freeze and cause the water to stop working due to water freezing in the storage tank. The baffle is in the back top of the fridge covered with a plastic cover. Remove plastic cover to check baffle function.
