VT 2461 Won't let me register new handset

I have a VT 2461 base with 4 handsets.   One of the handsets was destroyed and I purchased a new one.   Trouble is, the base won't let me register the new handset because it won't release the old, destroyed handset's registration.

Is there a way to reset the base back to new, so I can re-register all of my handsets ?   (and no, unplugging the base for a couple of hours doesn't work)

Thanks !

i HAVE THE VT2461 ANSWERING MACHINE AND 3 HANDSETS. RECENTLY ONE OF THE HANDSETS (LABELED HANDSET #3) BROKE SO I WAS ABLE TO PURCHASE A REFURBISHED HANDSET WHICH WORKED FINE AND REGISTERED THE ADDTL HANDSET AS #4. I DID NOT REALIZE THAT THIS MODEL COULD HAVE 4 HANDSETS SO I BOUGHT A NEW ADDTL HANDSET AND ANOTHER REFURBISHED HANDSET AS MY FOURTH. HOWEVER, WHEN I PUT EITHER OF THESE TWO PHONES INTO ITS BASE, IT KEEPS SEARCHING FOR BASE. I HAVE UNPLUGGED ALL THE PHONES, TAKEN OUT ALL THE BATTERIES, REPLUGED THE PHONE, RETURNED THE BATTERIES AND 3 HANDSETS REGISTER. BUT THE SYSTEM WILL NOT REGISTER THE SPACE FOR HANDSET #3. I HAVE TRIED SWITCHING OUT THE HANDSETS BUT THE SYSTEM JUST DOES NOT SEEM TO RECOGNIZE THAT i AM NOT REGISTERING A 5TH HANDSET (SINCE THE MAX IS 4), BUT AM JUST REPLACING ONE OF THE HANDSETS (HANDSET 3). HELP.

were you ever able to register the additional handset? I have the same problem with 4 handsets, one broke and I bought 2 new vt2420 handsets. The unit wont register handset #3 (the one that broke). Would love to know if you were able to resolve the issue?

I did write vtech earlier and finally received a reply. I have not tried it yet, but thought I would share with the group.

To be able to register your replacement handset, you must de-register all the handsets from the VT2461 base unit. Follow the steps below to de-register your handset(s) from the VT2461 base:

For the VT2461 base unit (with a Tone or Pulse switch at the bottom of the base), take the handset out of the base, and any spare battery inside the base.

    1. Unplug the base from the power outlet. Wait approximately for 10 seconds.
    2. Press and hold down the PAGE button, and then plug the AC adapter in.
    3. When the POWER light blinks, release the PAGE button.
    4. Hold it down for 5 seconds.
    5. When the LINE IN USE light begins to flash, release the PAGE button.
    6. The HANDSET CHARGING light on the base will blink 5 times.
    7. Within 5 seconds from when it stops blinking, press the PAGE button once.

For the VT2461 base unit (without a Tone or Pulse switch at the bottom of the base), take the handset out of the base, and any spare battery inside the base.

    1. Unplug the base from the power outlet. Wait approximately for 10 seconds.
    2. Press and hold down the PAGE button, and then plug the AC adapter in.
    3. When the display on the base says “Pr”, release the PAGE button.
    4. Press MENU, the display would say “rh”.
    5. Press SELECT repeatedly and choose “AL”.
    6. Press TIME/SET to confirm.
    7. Unplug power from the base and then reconnect power to complete de-registration.

You must register the handset(s) by following the steps below:

    1. Make sure to charge the handset battery pack for at least 12 hours.
    2. If the handset display shows "SEARCHING FOR BASE", press the soft key to select “NEW”. "ENTER BASE ID" will appear on the
    screen.
    3. Enter the 15-digit Base ID code located on the underside of the VT2461 base. The 15-digit Base ID code may contain numbers
and characters, including 0 through 9 and *. Make sure you enter all 15 digits.
    4. Use the soft key to select “OK”. The screen displays “PLEASE WAIT!”. After about 15 seconds, the screen should say “FOUND
BASE”. If the handset displays “BASE BUSY TRY LATER”, the base unit is in use.

Goodluck to me and anyone else with the problem. I will let you know if these instructions worked.

OK - the above instructions worked. I used the first set of instructions since the bottom of my base had the tone/pulse button. You have to be very precise in following the instructions. I unplugged and removed the battery from all 4 handsets and chargers as well as the battery from the base. Then it was important to only press the page button once at the very end. Then, as I plugged in each handset and returned the battery, each handset indicated rejected by base and automatically gave the screen to enter the base id. I entered the base id, and for all 4 handsets the base was found. Hurrah - I hope this helps a few others out there.

Your cordless phones have exact frequency numbers usually posted on each phone by FCC regulations. All the phones have to be on the same frequency. If it doesnt activate after sitting it in the base unit for 30 seconds it wont work.

Rosehello's solution worked with one additional step for my handsets...After re-programming all of the 4 handsets, I had to unplug the base unit one more time and then it reset. Until that time it would only show"AL" and would not function.

I was able to resolve the problem. You must make the base "forget" ALL the handsets and start over. I contacted VTech tech support via email and they sent me the instructions. Unfortunately, I no longer have them as I sold the phones.
Just contact Vtech, they WILL solve it.

Can I buy a replacement hand set for an AT&T cordless model #SL82218

Yes, a "google search" for SL82218 returns quite a few loose handsets being sold on eBay. But then you'll have to deregister
the new handset from its old base and re-register it to your base...

1. When the new handset says "Connecting..." and goes nowhere
else, enter *331734 [menu] and it will soon beep and display
"Not registered"

2. To register the new handset to your base: on the base press
the "Handset Locator" button and hold it until the "in use" light
comes on ( ~ 4 seconds ), then release the button and set the
new handset into the base phone cradle. After ~ 30 seconds
it will beep and display its "Handset #" (next in sequence).

3: Note: the base has a limit to how many handsets it can handle,
if your system was fully populated you will have to clear all the
handsets from the base and re-register them ( it is the only way
to 'rescue' the place occupied by the lost handset ). The manual
describes how to "Register a HS" in Appendix C, pages 60-61
and it is available from: www.manualslib.com

Good luck !

I had to purchase a new AT&T cordless phone system since my last set was destroyed by lightening. My old system was CL82409 and my new system is CL82209. I have 3 expandable handsets from the old...

According to the manual starting on page 52, you need to de-register all handsets then re-register the handsets one at a time. The manual covers both cordless model numbers so the handsets should be interchangeable. I have included a link where you can download the manual if you need it.

How to I reset the base for a Vtech VT-2431

This worked for me after lots of digging....If you have already tryed reregistering your handsets and can only get two-or three to work try this and deregister them and re-register. If your base model number is vt2431: Take the handset out of the base, press **335782 on the dial pad of the base. (do not have the line active or anything , just put the (2) stars and 335782 in (no spaces) on the base unit. This will de-register all of the handsets at one time. Then just re-register the handsets...

I can vouch for the second solution. It worked perfectly on my 2461 with two extensions. Even the vTech website was not able to provide a solution.

Disfunctional Handset

has the secondary handset ever worked. Reason I ask is that it happened to me with a new addtl handset and the problem was that I did not remove the small piece of paper between the handset and the battery which caused only distorted figures to display on the LCD of the handset.
