Accessing through a new computer

I have used this router for a number of years.  I just got a new laptop, and it can see the access, but wants additional logon info.  If I type in "admin" for both user name and password, it doesn't connect because "windows could not automatically detect the correct security setting for this network".  How do I find the correct security settings? Also, there is a field in the logon screen for "logon domain:". Do I need to put something there?  What?

When I talked to HP, they said vista has a problem identifying security enabled routers.  Once I reset my router, the pc could access it fine.  Thanks, though!

Is the new laptop xp? or vista?

for these two pc, you can use the built in utility of windows dor wireless conenction. There you will only be asked one information. The wep key/ security key/ passcode/ (they both mean the same anyway) this is available in the User interface of the router . This is sometimes called the set up page, that if you access this will give you all the wireless settings. the best person to contact is your router manufacturer. That is this is still under warranty for free tech support.

Can't access my linksys on my laptops although I can on my desktop.

Hi ottawakids,

I see that you are having issues accessing your Linksys using your Laptops.

> First Check if the router is detected on the Laptops.

>If the Router is detected and un accessible you ill need to check if there are security settings in the Linksys Router.

>Check if the Linksys has a Network key, or check if the Router MAC address Filtering is turned ON the Router this can also prevent your laptops from accessing the Router.

>If all elsa fails try resetting the Router to defaults and start from scratch maybe some settings are incorrect, setting it to default will fix the issue of the Router not being detected.

I hope this helps.

Have a nice day.

Cant go to setup for my router

you can't access your router IP address? are there any errors? have you connected your computer to your router using ethernet while accessing the router? cause if try accessing your router wireless it will not work this should be done hard wired using an ethernet cable ^_^ also have you tried resetting the router to default by pressing the pinhole on it press it for 5-10 seconds then let go try accessing the router again ^_^

My router is 2 years old and yesterday, i started to get the message saying i am not connected to the network. Does that mean the router is no longer working ?

What is giving you thisw message? If it is on a laptop, accessing router wirelessly, then (on the laptop) go into Network Settings and verify that your computer is set up to use a Private network, as Public networks may not let you see other computers on the network. If it is set to Private, then your router may have stopped working. Try resetting the router by sticking a paper clip into the Reset hole, which resets the router to Factory Settings. Go ahead and connect to the router with a CAT-5 cable and use IE to go go to and complete setting (simplified) as follows:
In Wireless Section, Choose your SSID (Network Name), set security in the section below that by choosing security method and passcode. This passcode MUST be used by all users to access thev wireless signal. Let me know ( [email protected] ) if this does not help.

How do i set security on the router and limit the number of computers access to the router.. i think the neighbors are accessing the internet trough it.

Setup the router to use a password. Once you have the security setup on the router it will not be necessary to limit the number of connections though you could limit the number of DHCP addresses it assigns.

Please see page 51 of the users manual for instructions on setting up WEP.

Router installation

THis can be a problem with the wireless settings of your router, I believe your laptop is trying to connect wirelessly to your router, This can be solve by accessing the router setup page and do some changes on its wireless settings settings like the SSID and the most important one the wireless security..If you're not familiar on how to do that I will advcie you to call LInksys tech support so one of their tech can walk your through with that process, they are open 24/7 this is the number 800-3267114.......

if the router was the problem, then no site would be accessible from either of the problem pc's.

unless the webkinz site is being blocked because it contains active scripts. check the configuration page for the router (usually and switch off any active firewall / security applications running on the router.

I have wireless router and my laptop will no longer connect to the internet. The computer says wireless networks are available, but when I try to connect it asks me for my security key or passphrase. It's...

Maybe provide the brand of router.. Anyway, I have lost my details as well, several times over the last couple of years.. It's just a case of accessing the router (via web browser, using the correct IP address for your brand of router).. Then you can delete the existing network & add a complete new one. You get to use a new key & passphrase. If you need further help, please provide your router brand & model. Rgds, dave
