Information to question already asked the fact the power is lighting both lights up but no noise of starting to boil does this kettle need a new element and if so where can a get it fixed.

You are not specifying what make it is but you hardly get replacement elements for kettles any more. The fact that you can see that power is available at the kettle it is indicating that it might be the element being defective. Had it been it switched on without any water in it? If it is the old type where the electrical cord gets plug in at the kettle check if it is well plugged in otherwise it is time for a new kettle.

Electrical cord on kettle shorting out and smoking. is this a common problem?

Power cords should not get hot, short or smoke. This is a fire hazard and it should not be used until a replacement is found or the the kettle is checked out for safe operation.

We need a new cord, our has been damaged. Where can we find this item? Does it need to be specially ordered? Do you need more info about the microwave? THank you- D.

It is quite possible that the cord is removable as on kettle. In this case, a kettle cord can be used.
If the cord is hard wired to the microwave, it will have to be replaced by a technician or electrician but ordinary 3 core pvc cable with a cross sectional area of 1 square mm can be used.( For a 230v supply)

Power cord overheats

The thermostat is not shutting the unit down and cycling it on/off as it should. This will cause the power cord to overheat and it will catch fire. STOP using this unit and either replace it or have it repaired. More than likely cheaper to just replace it.

You need to dry it as much as you can by hand, then take a hair dryer and see if you can dry it the rest of the way. You may need to open things up to expose the cirucitry and check for water.
