A monitor that is slow to show a picture is a good indication of a power supply that is in the first stages of failure. The filter capacitors are not holding a charge correctly and it takes a bit to get up to full change and the power supply can start up. if you disconnect the monitor from rhe computer, and leave it on, does it show the "cable disconnected" message error correctly?

you're video card is failing, try the secondary port if you have one, artifacting such as different colors, shapes and lines are VGA related, you need a new VGA card and for more info contact http://tinyurl.com/m7ghqz

I think I had the same problem today, I just turned on my PC and the letters and startup screens were purple all of the sudden when the day before they were just fine. Well this is what I did to fix it.

Your Monitor should have some buttons below the screen. You want to press the button that says
"Menu". Once on the Menu screen use the up & down buttons on the monitor to scroll through the menus. What you are looking for is a "Reset" option once you find that choose to reset the Monitor and all the colors should go back to normal.

Check your MAC's standby, power and screen saver settings

Is it an HP or a Viewsonic screen ?

Either way, looks like a power supply problem to me, some Viewsonic screens are known to have a problem with their inner power supply card, If your screen is still under warranty I suggest you don't lose time analysing the problem and just make them come and fix/replace it

Check the fuse on the inverter board F1.

usually this indicates that the lcd crystals are going bad
