TV turns on and off by itself

I have an RCA Model #27F520TYX5 and Mon night it started turning on and off by itself as well as switching channels. No ghosts here, I don't think so I just unplugged it before we went to bed. Yesterday I changed the batteries in the remote and it worked fine in the afternoon and evening. Today it started again............BUT now the remote does not work even with 3 sets of new batteries. I have to turn it on manually but as soon as I try to change a channel or adjust the volume manually the set turns off. I called Thompson's........ha...........they gave me the name of two repair shops nearby........one number was disconnected..........the other.........the prices were outrageous..........I could buy a new TV for what they wanted for service. Anyone have any suggestions? I unplug it and wait...........have no idea why the remote is not working anymore. I cleaned the sensor and the back vents............I am stumped. I like this TV but since it's less than 2 years old............I think maybe we will opt for another brand besides RCA if we need to get a new one. Thanks for any suggestions in advance in trying to get this one working before we have to make another purchase.

Had to have it repaired. It was something with the main power voltage microprocessor. Works like a charm now. Thanks for trying to help.

ginn5135, my RCA 56'' just started the same thing power on/off and changing channels. How much did your repair cost? wonder if its a part I could order from ebay and just pop in myself?

I am with the other user, would it be something that you can get repaired by your man or do you have to take it in? Ours is doing the same. Our daughter is not happy that she cannot watch her "toons" so easily in the morning before school. Hahaha! I just want the dang thing to work!

Same tv, same problem...and it isn't a neighbor switching it on and off. It just repeatedly turns on and off continuously. RCA should step up and at least post a remedy on their website. I have only owned RCA tv's and I think it is time to switch (shame on them)!!!

RF interference

You most likely have a neighbor (someone nearby) who is inadvertently changing channels as well as turning your TV off and on. The above statement is most likely true if you have an "RF" (radio frequency) TV/video, if it is IR (infra-red) the likelihood is basically zero. Still the problem you mention is happening due to some sort of RF interference.

Resolution of the problem depends on what the cause is, if it is in fact "RF" you can try putting your TV in another location, Try a few locations. See if you can change the RF input channel. If none of those work write back with results.

My RCA set just started recently doing the on/off issue too so, I decided to look on line and found many of you having the same syptoms. What I was experiencing was, no matter what button was pushed, it would turn off/on and also turn off/on by itself. I decided this past weekend I would take the back cover off mine, use compressed air with an air nozzle and blow the dust from every area I could. I particularly concentrated on the front control panel strip. I blew into the tact switches the best I could while I had it removed from where it is held in by two screws. Turned the set back on and realized they worked again. I was thrilled! Maybe this is a solution for some of you out there. It's worth a try.

Hi I have the same problem, but it is not just as easy as unplugging the power cord or turning the power strip off, when I am playing games or watching TV it will repeatedly turn itself on and off making it impossibly to use the TV. I tried having it unplugged for 4 hours but I still had no luck. I had this problem before in the past and after awhile the TV just mysteriously started working it's normal self again, but now after a couple years it is starting to do the same thing again. Any help would be greatly appreciated, being it is the only TV I own and cannot afford another one at the moment.

How do I get my Bush tv to start in HDMI mode not tv

you cant, the tv will always come on the tv channel. you can turn the item off that is plugged into the hdmi port then back on and it will take over the tv channel and switch to hdmi. so on a night turn off the item plugged into the hdmi port and on a morning after your tv has turned on then turn on the hdmi item and the tv will switch over itself

Problem with channel skipping has rectified itself. I simply unplugged the set and and started over with remote intructions on signal and channel setting. The tv was also turning itself off and on, this also has ceased. Thanks, hope I don't need you later.

RCA TV

First try to take out the batteries out of the remote and see if its activatibng the TV set. if its not then there are probably bad micro switches in the front of the set, or the microprocessor could be going bad, or the remote sensor is acting up

Rca model P46920BL

This could be a remote problem, try it while the remote it out of range/no batts if so just replace the remote. Pull the batteries out of the remote - fixed? Then: Check the switches, sometimes people clean the set and fluid drips down corrodes the hidden switches and some components near them. If not that check continuity of the switches Another thought, is if you have compact floresent lamps in the room, these can cause some IR interference that can trigger events on your remote control input. last, does anyone near you has the RCA TV? mybe other remote is effecting your TV...
