Is this something fairly easy to locate and repair by someone with a little common sence? Me, or does it require a tech person? Is the adjustment and/or part required expensive?

  • wyttail May 08, 2009

Understood. I ask because I was a electronic tech while in the U.S.M.C. That was 20 years ago though and much has changed since then. Many thanks and have a great weekend.

KP-57HW40 rear projection TV colors out of alignment and warped

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms
  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2

Another common problem is dull or washed out video.
Your TV may have one or more of the following symptoms....
  • Dull looking picture
  • White looking picture
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking picture

Screen is red with lines when channel is changed

If its a kp-51hw40 : go to an unused video input and look at the screen---if it is redish in the background with curved faint trace lines you have one of two things wrong; First: the red "screen" control may be set too high. Second: you may have a problem with the RED picture tube.

To try to adjust the RED screen down you have to remove the entire front grill plate on the front of the TV(some have screws on the back on either side that have to be removed---and then you should be able to pop it out. Behind it there is a masonite inspection plate held in with screws----Once you have that off look for a SMALL SQUARE BLACK PLASTIC BLOCK; it has 6 black adjustable controls---you have to use a flashlight and look carefully---one row left to right will be marked FOCUS--DON'T TOUCH THOSE---THE OTHER ROW left to right will be marked SCREEN; if you look carefully you will see marked by each r (red) g (Green) b (blue)
you want to locate the RED SCREEN CONTROL.

WITH the set still on a blank video input where you can see it clearly turn the RED Screen Control to the left until the lines and red tint go away---do this slowly and make sure you are adjusting the RED screen--not the FOCUS.

IF this has been helpful give me a vote here as I do this for free; yesterday I adjusted one of these in a home that was blue with the faint lines---about 15 minute job for me.

Red Bowed Lines / Red Hue

I tried the solution that was posted for this problem and it worked!
Just remove the Low front panel by removing the two bottom screws that are covered by two screw covers, then remove the second panel (black) by removing the 4 screws then you'll notice a module with 6 adjustment knobs, get a small screw driver, and with the t.v. on, being carefull , and with somebody accross the room looking at the screen begin with the lower left knob and turn left very slowly and ask the person across the room to let you know if the screen is better or not, after this I had to adjust the green as well so, I adjusted the next knob over to the left. Do this adjustment carefully and try to remenber the original position of the knobs in case you have to go back.f
Good Luck,
Californian.

SONY KP-57HW40 TUNS OFF AND STANDBY LIGHT BLINKS 6 TIMES

6 blinks is usually associated with failure of the horizontal deflection amplifier - which shuts down the high voltage system as well.

The repair requires testing to determine the exact parts that have failed. There are, for example, a few hundred parts and a section of the Jungle IC chip involved. So, repairs could require something as simple as replacing some inexpensive passive components OR as complicated as replacing the jungle chip (very expensive).

most of the time it's the horz. transformer and transistor.
