It really depends on what kind of editing that you want to do. For some the simplicity and limited function of Grageband is all you need, but to have more control and effects you will want to use logic effects. Both are really great software though.

A noise gate is a software that is used to get rid of noise in a recording that you don't want.

anything below the established threshold will activate the gate. if the threshold is 20 decibals, than noise at 19 decibals will be lowered by the gate

They both lower volume, but a compressor lowers the volume of a signal that gets too loud, and a noise gate lowers the volume of quiet signals such as background noise

You are probablly overdriving the unit. Too much gain saturates the electronics. The noisegate really only works to eliminate noise when input signal is below a certain level... it is NOT used or effective when at high signal levels. If you set gain too high the tiny signals will open the gate. The noise gate will prevent low signals like guitar "handling" noise from passing through until you are actually playing the guitar. This is the purpose of the noise gate.
