Briggs and Stratton OHV V-Twin 24hp repetitive valve adjustment

Engine was hard to start, wasn't releasing compression. Adjusted valves to .004-.006 at TDC. Ran great for about 4 or 5 hours and started popping/backfiring. Adjusted valves again. (exhaust valve was a little loose) Ran good 4 or 5 more hours and problem returned. I took it to a local shop this time. He called Briggs and was told to set the valves to .005 at TDC on both intake and exhaust. Once again, it ran great........for 4 or 5 hours.......popping again..........backfiring again!!!!!!! When I pull valve covers and check valves, the exhaust valve on both cylinders was a little lose. However, the locknuts on the adjusters were tight. I AM LOST. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When trying yo start the lawn moyer it acts like its hitting a tight spot. I checked the compression and the compression is much higher on one side than the other.

With the plugs out the engine turned over fine,

When it does start it runs fine.

Please tell me what to do to releive too much compression.I have never adjusted the values. Can you help? Thanks Jay

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.

Engine won't stsrt as starter won't wind over past compression stroke. starter and battery good

check your valve adjustments, quite common for this to happen when the valves go too far out of adjustment.....it will work better with them adjusted too

18 hp vanguard 165lbs and 180 lbs compression have to hand turn engine past compression or starter wont turn engine over

if its hard to get the engine to turn past the compression release then pull your valve coversand try setting your valve lash
.006 on intake
.008 on exhaust

18.5 HP OHV LT INTEK BERNING UP STARTER IT DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH BALLS TO TURN IT OVER

If you have a good battery then the problem likely is the valve adjustment. I know it sounds crazy but if the valve lift is not set right it has too much compression. These engines have a compression release for when it is cranking to make the cranking easier. When the engine starts it goes off and runs normal. If you get that adjusted it will run like new. it is pretty cheap to have the shop do it too.
