Most stock units are equipped with a US & Canada map if purchased in the US. Yes, the unit will work in Italy but you will need to add a Europe Map on an SD card, as the internal memory may not be large enough to hold both maps.
If you're running the latest system software on that GPS, then I would say send it back to Garmin, including all the powercords etc...
You know, they sometimes have issues with their 12 volt power adapters. You may want to contact Garmin about getting a replacement cord. That was the issue with my wife's Garmin Nuvi 200.
More than likely when you reinstalled the gps receiver (the board with the wires connected to it) at the top of the receiver you did not position it properly. If it is not positioned properly it will not receive a satellite signal
Yes, even a 2GB card will work in the Garmin Streetpilot. You will transfer your additional maps to the SD card, plug it into your unit, and then go to the Map System page to activate which map you want to see.
