Picture discoloration to left and right of screen.....

I have a 55" Philips rear projection HDTV that is about 2 years old. I've always had this issue, but it has gradually gotten worse and worse and now I figure I need to do something about it. Generally, I have panels of discoloration to the far left and far right of the screen (I have found this difficult to explain to people so have attached a picture). The picture quality is okay, it's just that when I'm in widescreen or HD format the bands of discoloration appear at the sides. The panels are in the same place. For example, if the picture was a direct overhead of a football field, the picture would be fine between the 10-yard lines, a dark shade of green. The areas of field between the 10's and the endzones would be a lighter shade of green. The middle of the screen is fine, it's just the 4 inches either side that are screwed-up. I called the Philips technical rep and he was useless. He actually argued with me that the screen was supposed to be that way! I'm totally lost with this one. I read something about side shadows and that seemed to relate to my issue?

Hi! Guy,
This sounds like the G2 may not be properly adjusted, providing too much beam current.
This will some times cause feather edging, or lighter than normal raster on some scenes. This set should be serviced by a qualified service tech.

replace the convergence ICs STK392-120 you will need both of them also check the 6.8 ohm resistors right next to the ICs as often 1 or 2 of them burn open. You should be able to notice the discoloration in the center of the resistors.

Side shadows on picture

it sounds as if there are speakers to close to the tv or the built in speakers are not magnetically sheilded properly (maufacturer defect) if u have or have ever had speakers on the left and right side of your tv then the magnets in them will discolor and distort the screen. sometimes even long after the speakers have been moved away from the tv it will still look that way. you may try going to the library( or online )and looking in tv repair books on how to build a homade degauser unless your tv has that feature built into it in the menu somewhere like some computer monitors do. I had placed the front speaker of a 5.1 surround sound system on top my tv and it cuased that same problem, but i found out that by placing a small round magnet with a hole in the center on top of the tv (after removing the speaker for good) right where the discoloration was.. had to flip it one side or the other to get proper effect...it immediatly took away most of the discoloration and over time it disappeared. I hope this helps. Please email me at [email protected] as to your conclusion in case it will help others. thanks, Adam
