It's doubtful that bad gas caused this, it sounds like the cord was back-lashed and partially came off the recoil pulley. Remove the recoil cover and ensure the cord is all on the pulley, make sure the rewind mechanism works smoothly before re-installing.

Remove the Starter Assembly Cover: Use a screwdriver to unscrew the starter assembly cover and remove it from the trimmer.

Diaphrams can be tricky sometimes...seating can be irritating. If carb disassembled and cleaned out...might have to check adjustments. Make sure screw didn't get loose. I had one do that before when governor broke.
How did you mix the fuel?
Best to make it up in a jerry can. Mix the fuel and oil in the can.
It may well be flooded.
Try starting with ignition on, choke open and full throttle, might take up to ten pulls.
Although it is called dual line, only one line is used - except that you
use both ends of the line. Cut off as much line as you think the spool
will hold. Put the two ends together to find the center of the line.
Some trimmers have holes to thread the lines through and others have a
place to hook the bend at the middle of the line. if yours has threading
holes, thread one end of the line through each hole and then pull on
both ends until the bend of the center of the line won't allow any more
slack. If your trimmer has the place to hook the bend, hook there and
start winding the lines in the direction shown on the spool. Be sure one
line is on one half of the spool and the other line on the other half.
Wind both lines at the same time as smoothly as you can. When the spool
is full, insert the loose ends through the trimmer head, insert the
spool and pull on the strings. Hope this helps Tim
Here is a site that can help if I did not understand your question correctly:
sounds like the carburetor has gummed up a bit, and may need adjustments - or, the fuel pickup in the tank has come loose [i.e.: deteriorated fuel lines] - also, make sure your gas mix is FRESH. if your gas mix is more than 2 months old, dump it
Check the shaft to see if there is something stuck in there. You can pull the wire shaft out to check. It is wire but looks like a small cable. Good luck...Lee
Check the line head and cable, there may be grass or something like twine twisted between the shaft and housing. If nothing is found there take the spark plug out and see if it will turn over, possibly liquid gasoline has gotten into the cylinder somehow.
Hi I have a craftsman 4 cycle model no. 316.791970 gas trimmer. When I pull on the rode there is little resistance . I took the sparkplug out and put a flash light down the hole and there is a thing that is moving . What should I look next, or do you know what is wrong? Thanks for any help! I've had it only 3 years and already Sears have replace the clutch assy.
those are usaully under your pull start cover and if its broke you can buy a new rope but if its broke near handle i would open it and retie it to save ya money. but remember to wind spring a little to keep tension on it before pushing it through the hole for handle.
