Whirlpool pin retainer is broken on ice dispenser

Whirlpool ED5GTGXNQ00 side by side pin retainer is broken off of ice maker dispenser housing. It holds the door flapper for the ice dispensor. The repair guy says that I have to replace the WHOLE FREEZER DOOR, because of this tiny little plastic pin retainer. I really want to be able to fix this as I still have all the parts and glued the plastic thing back, but I don't know how to get in there. Some one posted a model number for the kit a while back and when I go on the whirlpool site it doesn't come up. Where and how do I order the kit, and does it come with instructions.

the door flapper is broken off the ice maker how do I replace it

  • themackshack Jan 04, 2008

I have the Whirlpool Ice Door Kit available for $39.95 plus $5.00 shipping and handling. The kit includes a metal frame that will replace the broken part in the door mold. It also includes all the parts that operate the door including the door itself. I only have 2 kits available at this time so first come first served. Please go to Ebay and look up user name, themackshack, and email me. It's alot cheaper than replacing the entire door. That is what you had to do before this kit became available. Thanks, Mack

This is easy. there is a small area beside where the piece broke off. bend a small peice of metal coat hanger at a 90 degree angle, (this is so you can make your new hole on the correct line) heat the end with a lighter, burn a smallhole thru this area beside where the previous hole existed. now throw away the old pin that you were using and use a piece of coat hanger cut to the right length. on one end bend about one half inch to 90 degree angle, feed thru new hole and thru your spring and flap and thru to opposite side hole and lastly make small bend to keep wire from sliding out. ta da, fixed. problem solved for about two cents. i have successfully repaired many of these doors.

Thanks for the post, been looking for a cheap fix to this problem since there no available housing part from Sears and the part # 8201756 is too expensive for such a little broken plastic tab....

Thank you for this tip. The plastic retainer on my fridge broke too. When I realized that the part was not replaceable, I had the exact same idea of improvizing with a piece hard wire. But I really wasn't sure that it would work. It was reassuring to find that someone has done it and it worked for them. BTW, great design Whirlpool! When in doubt, use a material that is guaranteed to break eventually, and make the part unreplaceable. The complete freezer door for my fridge costs $1281 on searspartsdirect.com. The fridge itself cost $700. So Whirlpool would have us throw away the entire fridge because 1/4 inch plastic tab broke off.

The correct part to fix the broken housing is 8201756. The other part listed is just a replacement for the ice maker door and does not fix the broken housing.
8201756 comes with directions and with a little work fixes the problem. I found the part in many places but picked it up on ebay for $40.00.

Kenmore 106.45436400 same as Whirlpool ED5GTGXNQ00 side by side pin retainer is broken off of ice maker dispenser housing. It holds the door flapper for the ice dispenser. Sears says that I have to replace the WHOLE FREEZER DOOR, because of this tiny little plastic pin retainer. Sears no-customer support says that there isn't a fix--tough luck. Whirlpoor says it's Sear's problem. Help!!

You don't have to replace the whole door. There is a kit that comes with instuctions. You can get it at www3.sears.com and the part # is 2206423 and switches over to #8201649 and is called door mechanism assembly. It is $42.99. Use # 2206423 for lookup purposes. Hope this helps.

The part #8201649 does not come with a metal bracket , the one that comes with the metal bracket is #8201756

The problem with these solutions....the parts that are being recommend dont have the housing....the part that breaks off is actually molded to the housing

  • Anonymous Dec 11, 2012

If that is correct part molded to housing is broken - then is the only answer to replace the whole door as Whirlpool recommends

  • Anonymous Dec 11, 2012

if the part that is molded into housing is broken - then does the whole door have to be replaced on does #8201756 work

I have a whirlpool model ED25PWXBN00 refrig and the ice maker is making ice but the part that holds and dispenses the ice has broken and no longer dispenses ice. what part do i need?

That depends if the ice maker continues to fill with water or just sits there with the ice slots empty. Sometimes it is the dual water control valve=> 4318046 Water Control Valve
and sometimes the ice maker itself. Does not hurt to have an extra part of each if you are a ice user like myself. If ice slots are empty fill with tap water and allow to freeze. If the ice drops and slots do not refill with water then replace the dual water control valve. 4317943 Ice Maker Assembly.

Replace water inlet valve for ice dispenser with new. When icemaker cycles it dispenses through the water dispenser instead of tube going to ice maker. I have switch lines around but can only get water...

The ice maker is what tells the water control valve to open so it may be correct now and the thermostat in ice maker may be defective. Part 27 or 627985 down below where it says Whirlpool Ice Maker Parts Breakdown and in that photo is the ice maker thermostat. If your ice maker has been used for many years the complete ice maker may be better to replace. Ice maker Model=> 4317943

Ice Maker Works, Water Dispenser Doesn't

Side by side Whirlpool fridge with ice maker as well as ice and water dispenser in door. Dispenser works for both ice and water so water is getting to the system, but the ice maker has suddenly stopped...

If you have a whirlpool icemaker inside of your freezer (I've read on other posts that whirlpool ice makers are installed in various makes and models), there is a white cover over the ice maker (it's square). Remove the square cover with your hands or stick a flat head screwdriver in the side until you can pull it off.

Once the white square cover is removed, you should see a white wheel with gear teeth. In the middle of the white wheel is a plastic snap that should be holding it in. I noticed that one of the little plastic snaps was broken...which caused my "no ice" problem. A simple test is to push the white wheel toward the icemaker. If the wheel starts turning, you have found the problem. You see, behind the whhite wheel are metal contacts that need pressure for the ice maker to work. Without the center plastic snaps holding it it, the pressure is gone...and so is the metal to metal contact.

I previously called Whirlpool, searched all of the web...to no avail. Every other solution was "check for ice blocking the water tube" or "replace your water filter". That's all balony. If your regular water dispenser is working, you don't have an ice problem. And if your water dispenser is working, you don't have to change your fitler either.

If you realize that the little white wheel is the culprit, just google "whirlpool module" and you will see it for sale. I found one on ebay for under thirty buckaroos with free shipping.

Hope this helps.

Freezer does not make ice

You need to check and see if ice maker has any water init. if not check the fill tube that goes thru the back wall for stoppage while you have it out rin the maker thru a harvest mode and listen for the sounds of the solonoid opening. If tube is full you'll need to replace the slow leaking valve a common problem. for parts call 704-819-6557

Problem with ice dispenser in side by side refrigerator

Bensmom, the housing that holds the flapper pin probably cracked causing the flapper not to seal. Whirlpool use to have to replace the whole door at one time because the dispenser housing was a non serviceable part. That got too expensive so they came out with a kit to remedy the problem. The kit comes with instructions but you have to be patient and take your time. You want to determine first if this is the actual problem. You can do so by looking up into the dispenser and seeing if the pin retainer is cracked or broken off. I have done a bunch of these and the kit works great. I hate the job though. Part number for the kit is 8201756. I tried to attach a picture of the kit, but I guess the file was too big...Catriver..post back.
