Usb boot drive using bios

The pecking order for boot is controlled as you have said by the bios. I have found that not all USB connections are the same and have had to try the different USB connections to get one to boot.

Make sure that the DVD is a system boot disc and is in the drive when you power up.

If the HDD is still on the boot BIOS list I would try removing it from the list. The drive should still be available but the BIOS will not see it as a boot choice.

You may want to swap the SATA connections on the HDD drive making the SYS HDD no longer the default boot.

It is possible that the drivers for the DVD drive you are trying to boot from are not loaded and the drive is not accessible. Look at the bios using setup after turn on to see if the DVD drive is registered. It may be it gets its driver later during the windows boot.

You may have to use more of a generic DVD drive.or internal drive.

It is possible to boot from a USB drive....but only if the USB drive has been formatted as bootable, in the same way that OS CDs and DVDs are bootable media. You have to have an operating system either on the hard drive or on the flash drive in order to boot the computer. The BIOS is simply a "Basic Input-Output System" that interfaces the computer hardware to the OS, whatever media it is on. That is why you have to select the boot device and the boot device priority in the BIOS during setup, so it can direct itself to the bootable OS. Once you have installed an OS, then all will work fine. Until then, you will continue to have issues. Normally, with Window-based systems (you don't say what OS you are trying to use), you would insert the bootable Windows setup disk in the CD/DVD drive, ensure the BIOS was set to boot to CD/DVD first, and start the computer. The windows setup file would load itself and start the OS install process. It may even be necessary to partition and format the hard drive during this evolution, but the setup program would lead you through that as well. I have seen Windows setup files loaded to USB sticks, but they require a special process to generate so the BIOS sees the USB as bootable.

Restart your computer
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or the F2 key but will differ depending on your computer and Bios.
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys navigate to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos restart
this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system.
Note: After you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded
If you are putting windows XP on your computer your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd\dvd.

insert your usb drive
click start right click on my computer select open you should see your USB drive
right click then select format
another way is to control panel administrative tools,computer management disk management right click on your drive select format

if you are referring to a format on your hard drive

no you dont have to format the hard drive before installing it

1 many times the the CD cant load as the files in the CD are corrupt or the CD is not read by the drive corectly...so get a new WinXP CD
2 try an external CD drive if your BIOS alows to boot from USB drive....(connect the external CD drive to the USB and make necessary changes to the BIOS boot seq in the BIOS screen...
BIOS screen can be enabled by pressing the F1, or F2 or the Del key as on as you start the PC
3 once in BIOS screen look for boot seq and change the boot drive to the foll
1st boot device - USB CD / DVD rom drive
2nd boot device - internal CD rom drive
and so on

if you can do the above then try the WinXP installation using the external CD rom drive....
else there is a little complicated method of using a pen drive thru USB (will discuss that later) provided your BIOS alows booting from USB

You may not see option for USB drive unless you have a USB drive connected when you go into the BIOS.

Otherwise, you will need to attach a floppy drive, and create a boot floppy that then loads drivers and such for the hardware, as well as the interface, and eventually, the drive itself.
