Need help sending fax from laptop, Windows Fax and Scan can't detect modem.

A Dsl modem is not the modem type that you are thinking it is. The old school modems would be inactive and dial out when required. The fax was easily able to use this function. A DSL modem is on all the time and does not use the AT command system and cannot dial out. Therefore the unit cannot fax with it.

Can you hook up dial-up to a dsl modem

Can you hook up a dial up what to a dsl? A modem? No, you need a dsl modem for a dsl line. Typically, a dial up is POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and connects to a POTS 56,000 K modem. DSL will run much faster but not as fast as cable.

Computer modem and dial tone

Hello Mikenrgrsvll

This problem can be due to the software not handling a certain dial tone rather than a specific hardware fault. Around the world there is a variance in the signal quality of the dial tone which causes a report of no dial tone detection. Disable the dial tone detection to prevent the system from trying to detect a dial tone.
Disabling dial tone detection for modems:
Windows XP
  1. Click Start
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Click Switch to Classic View to change the control panel view
  4. Click Phone and Modem Options
  5. Select the Modem Tab
  6. Select the installed modem (Example: Lucent Technologies Soft Modem AMR)
  7. Click the Properties button
  8. Select the Modem tab in the Properties window
  9. Click Wait for dial tone before dialing to remove the check from the checkbox
  10. Select the Advanced tab
  11. Add X3 to the Extra initialization commands field in the Extra Settings box
  12. Click OK twice
  13. Select Switch to Category View to change back the control panel view
  14. Close Control Panel
if this does not work trying re-installing modem drivers.

hope this helps, have a good day.

Trying to launch internet explorer.it gives me error 680.

680 - There is no dial tone.

All versions of Windows are affected by this error.
No dial tone: There are many possible causes of a No Dial Tone Error.
First, try testing the modem's ability to detect dial tone and to dial by using HyperTerminal with the direct to COM port connect method - see Using HyperTerminal. If you give your modem an AT&FX1 command, and then a dial command, dial-tone detection will be disabled; if you still do not get dial tone, the modem may not be installed correctly (especially if it is a PCI or soft-modem); or the cable from the modem to the phone-line jack may be bad or installed in the wrong connector on the modem - try another line cord, and make sure you are plugged in to the LINE - not phone - jack on the modem. Plug a regular phone into the phone jack on the modem and make sure it has dial tone. The modem may also be defective. Many new modems come with an electronic circuit instead of the traditional electro-mechanical relay used to take the modem off-hook. Some of these designs are proving less reliable; often, they will be 'stuck' in the off-hook position, so unplugging, the plugging in the phone cord may give dial-tone. If this is the case, the modem needs repair or replacement.
If the modem will blind dial (x1), but not detect dial-tone otherwise, the problem is likely to be in the proper selection of the Country in Windows->ControlPanel->Telephony or in improper installation of the modem or lack of support for your country in the driver you are using. Check to see if there are updated drivers for your modem.
If the modem dials properly with detection (x3) in HyperTerminal, but does not detect dial tone when using DUNs, the problem may be DUNs (check for upgrade or re-install) or the proper setup and modem selection for the DUNs connectoid.
For Embarq telephone service customers, this error can indicate that you have a message waiting in your voicemail. Embarq changes the dial-tone sound to a "fast" busy signal when a new message is present in your voicemail box. This "fast" busy signal can confuse the modem into thinking there is no-dial tone present on the line.

Ic help

Scenario 2 to 4: Scenario 2) The modem does not have an Ethernet port. The modem is a dial-up modem for traditional dial-up service. To use the Router, you need a cable/DSL modem and high-speed Internet connection.

Scenario 3) You cannot use the DSL service to connect manually to the Internet.
After you have installed the Router, it will automatically connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), so you no longer need to connect manually.

Scenario 4) The DSL telephone line does not fit into the Router’s Internet port.
The Router does not replace your modem. You still need your DSL modem in order to use the Router. Connect the telephone line to the DSL modem, insert the setup CD into your computer, and then follow the on-screen instructions
