I have the same problem with my samsung gravity phone too...
You go to create new text message, type text message, press ok, select recent recipients list, and then the recent recipients list pops up.
However, no matter where I go in the phone apps, I can't seem to find a way to delete one or two phone numbers from the "recent recipients" list.
It is very annoying to have numbers from unknown people (who text me by accident, due to wrong number), to keep appearing on this list, especially since I use this list frequently and I'll never text the strange numbers again.
You can't delete them if you text enough people they will go to the bottom of the list and be gone. its the way with most phones now days.

Check your "messaging" application, in which you view your "inbox, outbox, saved, drafts". There should be options within that application that will allow to delete any recent txt messages. Hope this helps! Thanks.
