Spilled milk inside the fridge ends in the catch tray

A bag of milk spilled inside the fridge, somehow works its way through the body of the fridge and into a catch tray in the bottom of the fridge which is meant for water from the water line.

  • dntorres May 07, 2009

The problem is that the milk curdled and started to smell really bad. I've tried cleaning the tray from behind the fridge by removing the cover, however, the catch tray can't be removed from behind. The only problem is that it's bizarre that anything that spills in the fridge works it's way through the interior and into the catch tray. (we have young kids). The only solution I've been able to find is to drop vinegar in the tray, but now the kitchen smells like vinegar.

The pan is for holding the defrost water for it to evaporate. If the milk creates an odor, you can acces the pan by removing the front panel under the door (usually). The pan will probably come out so you can clean it.

Once you take one of those beasts apart, you'll see how milk could get from top to bottom.

Why don't you try one of those protein animal odor sprays. It may have enough enzyme action to eat the milk in the pan -- might work -- never tried it. But I know that stuff can really destroy odor.

Not getting water to ice machine

Shut off water supply to fridge - or if no stop-**** on that line, shut off main water supply. Place a pan or tray under the water connection to fridge to catch any spilled water. Unhook the supply line from behind the fridge. Have some one turn on the water line for a few seconds - if the line delivers water, something inside your fridge is clogged or frozen.

Can't clean out spilled (and now sour) milk spill

Hi, I'm not familiar with these fridges, but is it possible to access it from the back, underneath the evaporator tray? It could even be that the milk has gone down the drain hole and into the evaporator tray itself. Its a small flat plastic tray that has raised sides, and will probably have water in in, sits just above the motor

Milk which was spilled in the fridge has dripped into the drip tray behind the fridge and has created the most awful smell. Can the tray be removed for cleaning and if so how?

Yes, usually the tray can be removed for cleaning. You will have to pull the fridge out, unplug power, remove the rear access cover. Then you should see the evaporator / condensate tray and how to remove it.

My Matsui under counter fridge smells of old milk/veg really badly despite cleaning out thoroughly including catch tray at back and downpipe. It is only 1 year old - any advice gratefully received

Can you pull out the fridge and check that the plastic power cable has not been pressed against the compressor at the rear/bottom of the fridge?
Usually, overheated plastic cable smells like rotten veg!

Terrible odor from bottom front of fridge

The milk probably is gone, but there may be something in your coils. Inspect from front at the bottom, behind toe kick trim or from the back by removeing the access panel on the lower back of the frig. Coil cleaning should be done with the frig unplugged, vacuum out the dust and with a small brush resembling a bottle brush but smaller. clean between the coils. Don't force the brush. Twisting with light pressure will work just fine.

Smell under the unit, kenmore elite model number 44703

Hi: Not knowing your model number I would look where the milk was spilled and see if there is a hole. Possibly behind a panel for the defrost water. If so pour a little clorox bleach ane water in it. If not look for any cracks in the liner of your fridge. Those will expose the foam insulation to absorb the milk and cause odors. Clean them and seal them with teflon tape or a repair kit from the manufacture. On the off chanch the mild spilled to the front of the fridge and leaked behing the front grill the coils there are quite warm and will spoil milk fast. Pull the grill off and clean. I hope this helps, Jeff

This could be many things, from spilled milk to dust bunnys. Pull it & look under her for what may be the cause. Look for a drip pan that catches defrost water, pull that out and clean that. Repost I'll be back online tommarow.
