Choosing an HDD docking station

I have a 250GB 2.5'' SATA HDD from a Toshiba Qasmio laptop that I need to extract data from. I have been advised to use a HDD docking station, and I see that there are many available. Can someone advise me on a good make (cost is not a problem) and whether they are universal because the connection on the HDD in question is on the side and not on the top, so I do not see how that can dock. All manufacturers make the docking and data retrieval process sound so easy, but are there any problems? What about the passwords that were on the computer it came from - do they cause a problem in accessing the HDD? Also, is it an advantage to go for an eSATA station rather than a SATA. Pardon my ignorance, but I want to learn. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you are right, I have just checked my hard drive with the picture you have linked - and it is the same. It is actually a Fujitsu HDD made in Thailand - what next ha ha.The computer I have taken the HDD out of has a windows vista home premium operating 32-bit operating system, so I assume I will be able to overcome the password problem with a good external case. But will I be able to transfer the data - pictures and films etc into a compter with Windows xp, or will it have to be also into a computer with a vista operating sytem? Thanks again for your help.

You just need a an external case that supports 2.5" Sata harddrives and they will connect to your computer via USB.
haven't seen a harddrive that has the connection on the side ,it is usually at the back ,it could be some sort of a Toshiba adaptor that you might have to remove.
The back should look like this :
http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/images/MK8034GSX.jpg

There are many brands ,coolermaster ,nvidea etc ,some have USB ,firewire and eSata connectors (your PC has to have firewire and eSata in order to use them) The USB ones are usually cheaper.
As far as the password problem goes you can take ownership of that drive by using the security tab on the specific folder that you cannot access but this depends on which operating system you have .Windows XP pro and Vista home and upwards can do this.

Toshiba Satellite l775-14 has an error message and won't turn on

Buy an external caddy/docking station for your hard disk (IDE or SATA), take the drive out and attach it directly to another PC and access it from windows on the other machine to save your data.

How can I connect my hard drive of my toshiba a15-s127 which wont power-up because of a corrupt/missing file, to my second computer to back it up ... and will it transfer any bugs that could be on that old...

You must remove the hard drive and get an external enclosure for it. Best Buy or Microcenter will be able to help you with finding the correct enclosure (You will want a 2.5" enclosure in either IDE or SATA. The hard drive will have the type printed on it to help you decide).

This can then be plugged into your new computer to transfer data. Bugs won't be transferred, but viruses could be if they infected your personal documents, but your virus scanner should be able to catch that.

Toshiba 7140CT laptop only recognizes 65000 kb of new 250gb hdd when started with FDisk

An nice old machine!
If I recall correctly, FDISK low level formats partitions and I don't think the new hard drive will accept it without struggling. The bios on the mother board will not accept a drive as large as 250Gb as they didn't exist when the Bios was made.
Try partitioning as you require and format either FAT16 or FAT32 with another machine and see if it will accept it. I think the Bios was restricted to 6Gb drives so you may need to set up a lot of partitions!

Hope this helps.

Hi! I am trying to fire up a Toshiba 2590X and think the on switch is to the right of the Windows button on the top row, right hand side, but nothing happens. The power green and orange lights are on. Help...

Remove the battery and see if it starts up fine, if not then try the following:

1. Unplug your charger cord.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Press and hold the "Power" button for 30 seconds or longer
4. Now plug back in the power/charger cord.
5. Now put the battery back in.
6. See if it starts up now, laptops often get stuck in hibernate mode.

Putting damaged hard drive into new laptop

Have you considered an external case for your old hard drive? These can be found at newegg and tiger direct. I have successfully gotten data off of some old laptop drives this way. Hopefully your drive was/is not encrypted or this solution will probably not work.
In order to know if the drives will fit you would have to look up the specifications for both laptops. Look to see if they are both the same as far as hard drive size (2.5, etc), connector (IDE or SATA). One problem you will encounter just swapping out the drives is that there will be new hardware in the new computer and Windows sometimes reacts badly to a big change in system components. Sometimes it will blue screen, sometimes it will ask you to reregister and boot up, but even then you can have problems. Hopefully this helps some.
