Electronic repair I have a sony mini system with a cd/dvd player. For some reason when I put a dvd or cd into the drawer the drawer will close and then immediately reopen and not play the discs? When there is no disc in the drawer it will open and close normally? Any suggestions? Thanks, Rob

Sometimes DVD player drawers get stuck closed because the disc inside isn't seated properly. At other times the player may have another problem. The first step in discovering if it is the disc or another issue is to remove the disc. Most DVD players have a secret eject button. It allows you to open the drawer when a disc gets stuck and cannot be ejected normally.
For this you'll need a standard size paperclip.

1. Unfold the paperclip and make it as straight as possible.
2. Look closely at your DVD player . Push the tip the paper clip into the small hole on the tray cover on the front of the Toshiba. The hole is on the right side of the cover.
3. Press inward gently with the paperclip until you feel a slight resistance, then continue pushing to engage the internal eject button. The tray should pop open partway.
4. Gently pull the drawer until it's fully retracted. Be careful not to pull too far.
5. Remove your disc from the drive.
6. Before you reinsert another disc, use the remote and/or buttons on the player to close the door, and reopen it. You can also press carefully with your fingers. If you cannot open/close the drawer normally at this point, do not put in a new disc until you have repaired the problem.

What You Need

Could be bad belts, lack of lubrication on the MD side and even a bad power supply filter capacitor of the larger type. It would need to be seen by a repair Technician to resolve all issues.

I had a mini system with the same problem, out of guarantee so was either fix it myself or bin it.
I opened the unit and removed the whole cd drawer assembly from it's housing. I then, not really recommended, plugged it back in and by pressing the open/close a few times the drawer finally opened. Put it all back together and it now works fine. I think what had happened is that I use the cd player once every couple of months and combined with the lack of use is the fact that there are several smokers in the living room and basically it got jammed by a build up of nictotine or whatever.

take it back to the store or repair shop. Same thing happened to a friend and because it was new, the machine was exchanged.

What you might of done is pushed the dvd tray to close it, so its out slightly.Come across it a couple of times. all i did was, open the tray & before it started to close, switched off the power. pull the tray until it opens fully(dont yank it). when its fully open, try to pull it very slightly more. plug it back in & let it go back its self, if it doesn't. push it. all thats happened is its just out slightly. messing about with it like this will sort it im sure. let us know how you get on. Unless you can do electronic repair yourself and have the schematics for the drive it will be far cheaper and easier for you to simply replace it. Any DVD drive for computers will fit in there. I would buy a new one rather than used so you make sure and get the software with it. Replacing the drive is a 30 minute job at most.

Double check the Ribbon Cable Connector is installed Correctly ( 40-80 Strand IDE ) sometimes if these are not fitted squarely Or pushed in hard enough. Can cause a Problem.
Also try the emergency eject procedure on The Drive. Small jewellers screwdriver Or Needle, insert into the drives faceplate ( pinhole in drives faceplate drawer ) push to open dvd drawer. pull out drawer Gently. And push back in. This ocassionally works for a stcking Drawer/eject mechanism.
Finally try the drive without a disk in ( open/eject Or Close )

Take the lid off by taking the 2 to 4 screws out of the sides of the unit to get the disc out.
