You have to work from Sonicstage.
Follow these steps:
Install Sonicstage (probably you've already done that)
After installing, connect the player to your computer and select
'format' from the menu (This will remove all data from the player, so
you might want to make a backup).
Now transfer your music files to the player using sonicstage.
If you don't transfer them using sonicstage, the player data will get corrupt and tell you there is no data.

Press and hold the search/menu button for half a second in stop mode. The menu screen is displayed. Rotate the shuttle switch to select "Advanced Menu" > and press the play/stop button to confirm. Rotate the shuttle switch to select "Format" and press the play/stop button to confirm. Rotate the shuttle switch to select "OK" and press the play/stop button to confirm. "Formatting..." blinks and start formatting. When formatting is complete "complete" is displayed.
This is how i get rid of the problem "Format Error".

Hello,
Support for the NW-E002F on next site:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=NWE002F&LOC=3
Go to Manuals, Specs, Warranty:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=NWE002F
Select the Operation Guide and look on page 64, saying:
FORMAT ERROR, redirecting to page 66 and 37 of the same manual.
Save all data from the player to the computer before performing a format.
Format the player as described in the manual on the player itself instead of cable linked to the computer.

my SONY NWWM MEM AAD2 mp3 walkman, 1 gb tells me format error when ever I try to change menus and will not play music, can you help me ?
Hi,
Follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.
The NO DATA or FORMAT ERROR message may occur if the portable player has been formatted using the format utility in Windows Explorer. To correct this issue, initialize (format) the portable player using the Initialize or Format utility built into your Walkman player.
Reset the unit by pressing the RESET button with a small object such as a paper clip.
If the issue persists, I suggest that you un-install and reinstall the latest version of the Sonic Stage Software and transfer the songs again to resolve the issue. Click here to download the latest version of the SonicStage Software.
This should resolve the issue.
Thanks for contacting FixYa.
