I just undo the screws, remove any wire harnesses and try sliding out the board. Take photos and mark connectors in case there are two that are alike.

SOURCE: Vide problem

I think you have a problem in the vertical circuit in your tv. It sounds like you have a loose solder joint. The set would have to be taken apart and re-soldered. You really have an RCA chassis inside your tv. RCA's have a lot of bad solder connections. Stargazer

There is three numbers are used with model to model. It will differ according to chassis fitted with it. All chassis number will be the same, but the layout will have some difference, and company does it meant for advanced performance. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. I own a GE 31gt740 and I heard a squealing noise a few times, but TV still worked. Then, I turned it on one day, heard the squealing noise, then saw a little smoke, some crackling, and no sound or picture....

I think that the problem of your tv is the flyback transformer. The noise you are hearing is the high voltage, it is leaking from the flyback transformer. The smoke you see may came from the flyback or the capacitor. To be sure to the problem, try to remove the back cover of your tv but be sure to unplug it. Try to plug it, then turn on your tv but you should turn of the light so you could see the high voltage that is leaking but be very careful when doing it.

My tv turns itself on and then starts going thru the channel and when it is on will start changing channels?

Assuming your TV continuously changes channels on its own in the upward direction, I had the same problem with my GE 31GT740 TV and fixed myself. GE will give you the runaround and have you calling RCA who has no clue. The cure is simple but, you need someone to help you move the set around. Remove the rear cover by taking out all of the screws – obviously unplug the set first. Then remove the large circuit board by taking the two screws out from the underside. The TV will need to be laid down on the screen side so have a large pillow or blanket laid out. The main circuit board has two side stops that hold it in and then pry it a little. The entire board slides out and you can set it aside. Now, remove the front switch panel assy by depressing the two side stops. Then the circuit board behind the switches can now be removed from the assy. The third button in from the center is the ‘up channel button’. Pry off the small switch soldered to the board behind the ‘up channel button’. Reassemble and the problem will be fixed. In other words, the ‘up channel’ button on the TV set has gone bad.

GE 31GT740 clicks off and on

Dead, led flashing red/green at first, then going to red standby
Replace C604 (1000uF, 16v) elec. cap. It is in the decoupling circuit for the 5 volt supply
Reverts to standby from switch on via TV or Video
No 5v rail because FET MTP3055 o/c. (BUZ71 will do nicely)
Goes straight to standby, after a quick burst of power
Replaced R952 (39K), had gone slightly high

31GT740

The GE (actually RCA) 31GT740 uses the CTC203 series chassis. The first thing I would do is resolder the coil on the base of the horizontal output transistor and the pins of the horizontal drive transformer, as well as any other solder joints on the main PC board that look weak or cracked. 9 times out of 10 that cures the symptoms you described. If you do not have experience soldering parts on PC boards then have a qualified tech handle it for you.

GE 31GT740 problem

Sounds like you could have a bad Picture tube, as the filaments may not be lighting, as they are open, or maybe a video problem, or perhaps a problem in the Sweep power supply. This is an inexpensive TV set and will most likely cost more to repair then you could purchase a new TV for. Good Luck
