Hello my hp does not turn on when i press power button it seems like it begins to start all lights turn on i hear cooler but then it just turns off and then starts again i don't even see hp logo sometimes it starts up to the point where i can enter the bios but it cannot boot from hard drive because it cant find it. sometimes very rarely it boots to windows and goes without problems until i reboot or switch it off.
This is apparently a common problem for HP dv6000/dv9000 laptops. HP has extended the warranty on these models for this problem. See this page:

The problem is the ribbon cable to the power switch is bad, sound goes thru same cable. Look for a new cable on ebay. That fixed mine. It turns on and has sound now.
Well guys my problem started by one side of the speakers not woking, then they both went dead, soon after the power light went off and then i was unable to start it not even with the quickplay button because it would just hibernate. it is not a faulty os nor is it any sort of software problem. its the fact that the hp customer service is not good at all and their ability to use good computers parts does not exist. so... if u want to use my solution first u have to make sure u have the same problem... try with all ur might pushing down the power button without hitting the quickplay button and see if that will get ur laptop on. then, try applying pressure above the power button and the area around it see if u can get it to turn the light on, if u can then all u have to do is unplugg the ribbon like cable, clean out the connectors and plug it back in. hope it helps.
Zedmanauk is right. Just call to the number that they have over there, they'll send you a box to ship it and in 14 days you'll have your laptop like new

If you have sound in the headphones, but not in the
speakers, - common problem with defective ribbon cable underneath the keyboard.
We replace tons of them you can buy them on Ebay. We buy it from 2fix.net/flex-fcs.htm cause they are best quality, compeer to Ebay
stuff, and shipped from Chicago,
not China/Honk-Kong.

And KOTL is same poor quality. You'll end up with the same problem very soon.
Unfortunately, 120 days warranty for NO VIDEO repair,- which is BGA REFLOW/REBALL, - is not enough. Cause after this repair it'll work ~ 6 month, and quit. Those boards are not very good.

Have you tired running a Hard Drive regenerator program, it fixes any bad sectors on the Hard drive, but usually the computer won't start period if that is the case but still, you never know
Its your hard drive. I fix computers and come across this issue often. It is a hardware failure that is not fixable. You will have to replace the hard drive.
I did the catastorphic reboot of the system. Not only did I have to restart numerous times to update the updates, I still have the problem.
IT IS SIMPLE TO CHANGE THE RIBON CABLE, I HAVE A FEW FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED THIS RIBON CABLE

Precision Division in Clearwater, Fl repairs the HP DV 2000/6000/9000 Series laptops that display power but no video for around $100. They offer a 120 day warranty & make some changes to the system - such as speeding up the fan & adding some arctic silver.

Same problem here
I had the same problem (the laptop is about 6 months old) - the buttons flash but switch off again, then the computer can't start up. The volume light flashes red while all the other lights are blue. I went through MANY steps wit HP helpdesk (email and phone) to try to get it fixed; finally they put me in contact with a real person. He replaced a couple of parts, but the same thing happened, so he took it again to work on it - said the whole inside of the computer was now new; ie there should be no more problems. It is now only a few weeks later and the volume light is flashing red on start-up again and the laptop is making those same noises. So far it is still working but I am wondering for how long.
is the hp a lemon
I have a hp dv6000 series. But when i press the power button - does not boot!. It started with the internal speakers having problems but at the same time starting it needed some hard press on the power button, I was unable to turn off the pc from the button.
Now, I opened the top cover having speakers and quickplay lights, tried to fix the power cables by exchanging them in some way, but now the PC is totally silent wont start. Does these two cables under the k-board have something in common, as in when one is not connected the other is dead? Please help, some ideas on the trick will be much appreciated? Thanks
My laptop does the same thing. The power button does nothing (I turn it on and off using the "quick play" button) and the laptop speakers (Altec Lansing) do not work. External speakers connected through the headphone jack work fine.
I have this problem as well. Unfortunately, the problem with my HP is that the power button does not depress fully. I called HP support and though my laptop qualifies under the extended warrenty, the power button is not covered so they cannot help me unless I pay an extra charge. When I start the laptop with the Quickplay button, there is no way to get to windows besides hibernating.
I am putting money away for a macbook.
I have the same problem. Power button wont work. Can start PC through QuickPlay button but when I try to go to Windows, PC hibernates.
We have the DV6000 RK654AV. Pressing the power button & quick play buttons result in the same thing. The lights turn on (including the USB mouse, for a second or two, but then they go off. Sometimes I can mess with the quick play buttons & get the lights to stay on & then I hear a little life from "inside" but nothing. This is about 1.5 to 2 years old.
I dont know how to fix this.. the laptop wont even turn on??
same laptop, same problem. power button dead. can only start usng quickplay but cannot get to windows. when i click on the windows button system goes into hibernates.
i was able to get past the quickplay once by pounding the keyboard but dont know how i did it. it ran for 3 months and was never shut off, only put to sleep. unfortunately the computer was unplugged & battery drained and have not been able to start it again.
anyone lucky enough to know how to get past the quickplay start up into windows??
I have the same problem - first started with no internal speaker sound. now won't boot but will start quickplay - talking to hp they said to restore the drive as the os seems like its corrupted!!
We'll see how I get on
I had the same problem. Mine wouldn't start up but all the lights came on & you could hear the fan kicking in for a second. I have no idea what i did but i took it off charge. Took out the battery. Turned off the wirless and let it sit for 10 minutes. I put the battery back in after then & it came on straight away
i took off the memmorey card and fixed it back and i turn on the computer it make some noies so i switch off the plug 2/3 time and i can't still turn on my computer please help me to fix this trouble.thank you.
zedmanauk's information sounds helpful but is only "available in North America for 24 months" (those of us in the rest of the world often have to deal with this situation).
My lap-top, supposedly fixed with completely new hardware, has again gone to blue-screen, restarted etc. I have needed to re-download and install all the upgrades, which in Australia means paying for the extra bandwidth that requires.
My 'solution' for the moment is to stay late at work and use the computer here! I will probably end up with a new non-HP lap-top.
