You don't have to put the shield back on, no. If you aren't then you shopuld give it a coat of paint followed by a rust protectant.

SOURCE: 1991 jeep wrangler gas leak

Hello everyone,l

For those of you who haven't started removing the gas tank, I'll start from the beginning.
You will need a 1/2" socket, ratchet, extensions, flat head, needle nose, floor jack, rag, broomstick,. A creeper will make this easier. Depending on your dimensions and the height of the frame on your particular vehicle, you may be able to use it without jacking the vehicle up..

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal
  • If your engine is fuel injected, you need to relieve the line pressure. This is done from the injector rack on top of the engine. About the center of the rack you will find what looks like a filler valve on your tire, only thicker. The fuel line can maintain over 40 P.S.I. pressure even with key off. Place a rag over the pressure relief valve. Use the corner of a screwdriver to poke the center core through the rag. A second or two should do it.
  • Place a floor jack under the gas tank shield, jack it up until snug.
  • Disconnect the rear exhaust hanger.
  • Loosen and remove the three shield nuts above the rear end
  • Remove the plastic shield from beneath the left rear corner. Two plastic anchors hold it on. Disengage them by pulling the center plug out about 1/2". This will expose the hoses connecting the tank to the body.
  • Loosen the hose clamps
  • If you can get them to twist, try and get them off.
  • Rear nuts next. Loosen and remove all but the center one.
  • Make sure the jack is centered and snug
  • Remove the last nut. The tank isn't going to DROP. It will kind of lean, and jam against the exhaust.
  • Insert the broom stick into the exhaust pipe.
  • Push and hold it to the right, slowly let the jack down. Stop if it hangs up and work it free.
  • When its down far enough to access the top of the tank, disconnect the plug, loosen thew hose clamps, remove the hoses, separate the vent hoses at the 'T' connector.
  • Lower it the rest of the way
  • The tank can now be separated from the shield.
If you were experiencing a line leak, the top of the tank is where you'll find it. Inspect hoses, gaskets and connections

How to install gasoline filler neck 1998 chevy silverado

First disconnect your battery, drain your fuel tank, then support your fuel tank with a jack, then take the 3 bolts out on your filler neck by your gas door, then take the gas tank plastic shield off, then loosen the gas tank straps, then make sure you drop the tank a little to be able to reach up and loosen the hoses on the fill neck and then remove the hoses. Then install the new fill neck.
Then reverse everything to put back together.
But since you have everything opened up, take the time to look over everything before you put it back together, replace anything badly rusted or broken, no sense to have to do this all again.
I would say if doing this on the ground with jacks and jack stands, with all hand tools, this should take you any where from.an hour or two, depending how badly rusted everything is, it's best to.spray all rusted nuts and bolts down the night before a couple of times. I use PB BLAST, which for me has worked great over the years.
Remember, since you are around.gas, NO SMOKING, WATCH FOR SPARKS, AND NO OPEN FLAMES, NO CUTTING TORCHES !
Hope I was able to help you out and the way I.explained the steps were good, if need more info, let.me.know.
This is an easy job, just a pain due to the rust and jacking the gas tank

My truck ran out of gas and i put gas in and it still wont start.. could there be a reset button somewhere and where is it located

when you vehicle runs out of gas most likely cause is it has sucked up dirt from the botton of the fuel tank into the intake pipe this dirt is now blocking the fuel line and or fuel filter.

1 remove the fuel line from the engine end and using a can to collect it turn the ignition on if you have an electric pump at the fuel tank end the fuel should flow if it doesnt then the line is blocked, try browing or putting compressed air down it to drive the dirt back into the tank. wait an hour for it to settle and then try to start the car. (also fit a fuel filter if one is not fitted already)

if fuel is flowing the dirt might have got into the engine and it will need to be flushed out.(chekc fuel filter if fitted and see if it is blocked it may need replacing.

I hope this was helpful

Will not start, does turnover, but seems to be getting no gas. will turn over if i spray auto start in the carborator.

check fuel filter to see if its clogged. (cheapest easiest)
if that doesnt work rebuild carburetor (expensive but fairly simple)
if that doesnt work pull tank if it is low on gas or pull bed if gas tank is full a replace fuel pump (time consuming, hard to do, but fairly inexpensive) I had this problem on a silverado I had and it was the fuel pump.

My 1991 silverado does not accelerate from a parked position.

Mine is same year with 5.7 . 110,000 miles did exact same thing . Replaced fuel pump & fuel filter . all went back to normal. (feul pump collector filter was falling apart) Try just putting a new fuel filter first . Driver side under cab , on the frame. Hope it helps.
