I have a Toyota coaster bus 25 seater. Bought 2 years ago. I am facing difficulty changing into second gear when going up or down hill or even when the vechicel is in motion. All other gears are operational. What could be the problem? I have checked gear oils and gear lever rubbers.
I suspect that the synchro ring energising spring is failing and not allowing the connecting dog to move into position properly. First and second are on the same selector rail and move the gear dog from one position back to another position moving the same connecting dog. I think that you may have to pull the box to fix this.. get hold of a Toyota workshop manual and you will see from the diagram of the gear box what I am talking about.

hi if its just second to thrid then the clutch is slipping on thrid gear look at the boxes oil level is important but look at the colour is it red and tranperant as this is ok if its brown its a sign of the clutches slipping i would try a stall test on thrid gear first and if its ok second gear [manually] see is the engine stalls at the correct rpm if you thinkabout it imagine you are in thrid gear in a manuual box and suddenly drop into second it would be hard shifting it could also be a faulty thrid gear solenoid yates210456

Put your foot on the brake and you will be able to move the stick...

This could be caused by two things. Your engine could be burning excess oil under strain which smells like burning rubber, and also the belt could be slipping causing the smell. The only other thing is the tires may be slipping if they are worn. This would cause very uneven wear on the tire so the last one would be very obvious.

probably internal ,especially if your car has done a lot of miles/klms,you may need to look further, double check fluid level, shift from rev to drive slowly but still think trans specialist needs to look....hate to say it

The trannys on the vw's are weird, they actually have a brain which tells the tranny what to do, when to switch gears under the driving conditions etc. Is thair a check engine light on? when is the last time you had a tranny service done on it? Also, it sounds even weirder, but is your alternator ok, is it putting out the proper volts to the battery? the alternator not charging the system can lead to alot of weird acting issues.
