My Aspire 1 will not allow XP access to the IDE0. I am booting from a formated flash drive with XP files loaded. The hard drive shows in the bios, and in the setup screen. Under the IDE0 the statement "setup cannot access this drive" is shown. The only drive given access is the flash drive. I had the same issue when loading from a cd-rom drive on the usb port.
If this a new drive you need to prepare it using a hard drive utility before windows will recognise it. The drive manufacturer may provide this for you. Maxblast is one such program as is Datalifeguard from Western Digital.
