I hope you didn't run the microwave with nothing in the cavity, if you did, it will damage the magnetron.
The turntable dishes do get hot depending on the quality of the glass used to make it. Heat is caused by impurities in the glass.
If you run it with no food in the oven, the glass will try to absorb the energy with atastrophic results usually.
most likly it is the mag and the diode. it should be covered for ten years after you bought the unit so check into that. you will have to pay a ge authorize servicer to replace it though but parts should be covered and still cheaper than a new microwave
your 5kv fuse connected to the magnatron is probably blown..it looks like a white casing with two wires coming out of it..fuse is inside this..be careful please
have a GE xl1800 microwave that is not heating the food. The lights work, turntable turns etc. all but no heat. Help this microwave is only 1 years old.
Microwave popcorn gets VERY hot while cooking.
Even though the turntable is made of temepred glass, intense heat applied in the same spot over and over can weaken the molecular structure of the glass.
After so many expansions and contractions, it will crack because fatigue will cause some molecules to expand less than others, creating stress.
This is yet another reason I recommend to my customers that they place the food off-center on the tray - not in the center.
The oven also heats better when the food is off-center because the food is more thoroughly exposed to the microwave energy.
Until you get a new tray, the photo below can help you.
This is normal. That's why I always recommend to my customers that the food be placed slightly off-center on the turntable.
An analogy I refer to is stirring paint: If you stir paint with a stick by simply rotating the stick in the center of the can, it's far less effective than pulling the stick around an imaginary circle halfway bewteen the center and the edge.
