The timer knob spins freely and I can't start the machine or set the timer.

The Push/Pull knob for my GE top load washer spins and I can not set or start. Can I replace it with a new knob or do I have to buy a new timer?

    How do you pull the knob off? I pulled and pulled but it does not come off.

    This information is very helpful. I also have the same problem. But, I really cannot get the knob off. Ive tried unscrewing it , pulling it, and prying it. It will not budge. Any ideas?

It sounds like the knob is rounded out where it fits on the timer post, or It may just be loose. Pull the knob off and inspect it. If damaged, yes, you can buy another one.

    Try unscrewing it by turning it to the left (counterclockwise). If this doesn't work, let me know.

Its either your knob is stripped or the timer itself is..Most commonly its the knob assembly that's bad.(part# WH01X10061) I would try it first since the knob is only around $7.00 where the timer is around $140.00or so...

Could be one of two things. The knob or the timer. Both knobs and the timer through sears parts direct are under 100 probably with shipping. If the knob that you pull out and push in does not feel sloppy when you turn it then i would guess timer is faulty.

Kenmore Washer, Loose Timer Knob
There should be a spring clip that holds the timer knob on. It or the timer knob may need replaced. Here is a picture of the timer knob and the spring clip. Sure hope this helps and best wishes.

Washing machne problem
The help that you gave me was completely wrong. The support ring was okay. I solved my problem by buying a new timer and control knobs. The teflong 'gears' were worn out so the knobs rotated freely.
