Is there any way that my multifunction printer (Pixma MF500) can be set up so that all it's functions are useable and accesable wirelessly to my Macbook?
I do have an old desktop PC kicking around, can this be utalised in some way for this?
I'm sorry to say that the answer to your question is no. You can print wirelessly with most printers using either an Airport Extreme Base station or an Airport Express, but for scanning, you will need to be physically connected to the scanner.
If you wanted to, you might be able to set up that old desktop to be permanently (and physically) connected to the scanner, and then you could either connect to that PC over your home network to access the scanned files, or you could potentially email them to yourself from the PC. That might be your best bet.

Multifunction devices usually require two separate inks to acquire functionalities. For example, an empty ink cartridge especially the color ink may still produce copies without multi ink features. However, any attempts to dismaunt the ink cartridges would require restorations from the computer settings. First, inspect the printer for empty accessories that require replacements. After acquiring and replacing ink cartridges makes way for the next processes. Second, connecting the printer that has been restablished would produce display results requesting printer copy allignments. Attempt to print a document to produce the results for alligments. It only uses the large black ink cartridge and I have a drawer full of small 8BK cartridges. How can I get it to use the small black cartridge and not the large black cartridge? Thanks
No you can't.
Canon Pixma iP45500 is a sigle function printer. That means it just prints to paper.
What you want to do requires a multifunction printer: a printer is also a scanner/copier functions and which which is capable of acquiring an image and transfer it to the computer.
