PS3 not working through HDMI cable

Hi, I am from the UK and hope you can help me with what I can only describe as a mystery! I have been playing my PS3 thru an HDMI cable on my 50" plasma TV for a few months without any problem. All of a sudden a couple of weeks ago....no picture or sound on HDMI channel. TV says 'no signal'. My sky satellite box can play through the HDMI socket on my TV OK so this kinda rules out the TV and the HDMI socket on the TV. HDMI cable has been tested and is OK. I even tried two other HDMI cables without success. So you would think the problem was with the PS3. Nope... I have another PS3 console which I have hooked up to an LCD TV thru an HDMI cable to my LCD TV in another room. This works fine. BUT, when I connect this other PS3 consoleto the Plasma (via HDMI), this doesn't work either! Both PS3 consoles work perfectly on my the LCD TV. Just so you know, my TV is set to HDMI as it always has been. I am currently playing the PS3 thru the regular audio/video cables but when I try to set the PS3 to HDMI on this channel, nothing happens. I've tried everything short of dropping it from a great height so can you guys help me out??? Look forward to hearin' from you. Many thanks. Badgeman!

I have also tried my PS3 with different HDMI cable (I was using DVI output) and HDMI to HDMI it works fine on another TV but when it comes to my TV which was working fine, now it does not display thru DVI (it was doing).

Only possible failure seems to be with TV but it is functioning well on all other functions.

I got the same problem too...

I even recorded it, and made a youtube video.

The problem still hasnt been solved. I have a Sony Bravia (brand new) KLD-46z4500 LCD which the PS3 has been working with, for the last 14 days. Now its just the sound and black screen, and I have tried everything.. PS3 works fine on other LCDS, TV works fine with xbox360 (through hdmi..) they just wont together.

I have a 50" Toshiba and a PS3 and its not working through either of the TV's hdmi ports.  I tried the first one and the second one...nothing.  I have a blu-ray player hooked up through hdmi and it worked fine on both inputs so I know it's not the hdmi port.  Tried the hdmi cable from the blu-ray player...still nothing.  Even tried the cable hooked up to the PS3 on the blu-ray player and the player worked!  Last, I tried moving my PS3 where I had it before, on a Bravia and it worked fine...why won't the PS3 play on the Toshiba?

  • Anonymous Jan 22, 2009

Had the exact same problem but thanks to Bubbachuck post above its sorted :) Unplugging the TV for 5 minutes worked. Thanks :)

I had this problem. It was working one day and the next not. having not moved or touched nothing I figured it was going to be an internal thing. I did a bunch of things suggested in the forums then read about hard starting the tv. My 50' is only one month old so i thought no way right? Well unpluged waited a few pluged back in and there ya go it was working. Whew!

Power down and unplug TV.
Power down and unplug PS3.
Wait three minutes.
Plug-in and Power up TV
Plug-in and Power up PS3.

When the PS3 restarts, it will sense that you have an HDMI connection and will ask you to verify a few things including screen resolution. Answer the questions on the screen and you should be watching blu-rays in no time.

Generally speaking, what you are trying to do here is just re-boot and start from the beginning. In my case I received my PS3 before my HDTV so I connected the PS3 to my low resolution projection TV using the component connectors. After my LCD/HDMI TV came in I moved the PS3 to the new TV and had no luck with the HDMI connection except for sound.

Wow I had the same PROBLEM. It drove me insane because I would take it to my neighbors LCD TV and it would work perfectly there. And then I would come back to my room and then it would sometimes miraculously work again.

After tedious online searching, I FINALLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

I can safely say that it's probably NOT the PS3. Go here for solution: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1029039.html

I'll copy and paste the relevant info, courtesy of erucmm at whirlpool forums:
eruccmexcuse me if repeated;
I have the Sammy, and this happens every now and then. BUT i have the fix, it works EVERY time and its simple.
Turn TV off, take power cable out of TV leave for 2 minutes, then plug TV in and start playing.
I find that this occures when I swap from RCA TV to DVI PC to HDMI a few times, its like the TV just gets confussed or something. I found the answer to this on the Samsung help forum site. Many people running PS3's on the 42" and bigger TV's are having the same issues.
Hope this is your problem and not something more serious.
E

So to summarize: UNPLUG YOUR TV AND LEAVE IT FOR A FEW MINUTES. I'm guessing this discharges the capacitors or something "resets". Then do the old "hold down the power button for 5 sec" on the PS3 and VOILA!

Now...how much you guys wanna bet this is due to HDCP? I bet there's something screwy with the algorithm that is preventing people from "hot swapping" video ouputs.

More details: My monitor is the Dell s2409w and I use it as both my computer monitor and my PS3 display. This problem has occured twice and the last time it occured was when I brought my monitor to my friends house and hooked it up to VGA.

  • scottrad666 Oct 17, 2010

Thanks bubbachuck, this really helped. I just turned on the TV, switched its menu to HDMI, THEN whilst my PS3 was off (but plugged in with red light on) held down the on button for 5 seconds, it beeped and I could finally see a display!!! then I could change the resolution. sweet, thanks so much

  • mom2caden Dec 05, 2010

oh thank you so much. my husband gave me the job of figuring out why ours wouldnt work... Yours was the first sulotion I read and it was fixed in 30 seconds... now i can work on my Christmas Tree... lol

Hi Badgeman, I repair PS3 Consoles and other Video games, It is apparent to me that you have what is ailing many of the PS3 systems, I am finding the HDMI socket is poorly soldered, and not well supported mechanically. I believe your HDMI socket need to be resoldered. Probably on both your PS3 Consoles. This is common. My service in the USA, and I do not believe it is reasonable for me to repair your PS3 since Shipping and all prohibits the service. www.playstationclinic.com

Hi Badgeman, I had the same problem with my projector. It was not a problem with the ps3 it was the projector. I turned the projector off at the wall (not with the remote) turned it back on. HDMI worked fine after that.

Same problem, tried the other suggested solutions, then used the old reliable. I unplugged all components in the system, actually turned the power strips off in my case, waited a minute, replugged, problem solved. Additionally, this problem recurs for me and I have been able to solve it in different ways, and I like to try various solutions, but when I'm ready to watch a movie, everything gets the power disconnected and this method has yet to fail.

I have the same problem as Badgeman, This is second unit I got replacment from sony and same thing on one new LCD HDTV and one DLP HD projector. tryed it on my neibors new hdtv for ha, ha's and it worked??????? Did the first PS3 do something to my HDMI inputs mybe fried them or somthing. I have ued it flawlessly for about 4 months and then nothing on both. I do get sound on optical but no HDMI picture. My surround lacks HDMI connection to test for audio through the HDMI cable. and I bought a $150.00 hdmi cable to rule out that problem. I called sony and they said the DLP HD Porjector wasnt supported by the system??? it is a theater sysem what was 1080p for then??

It just happened to me. I turned the PS3 on and got the black blank screen of death. I tried all of the above and the only thing that worked was to turn my 50" plasma off as well as disconnect the power cord for a couple of minutes and voila, problem adverted.

I had the problem of the hdmi lead just giving up all of a sudden so changed to scart lead then realised quality was real bad brought a new hdmi lead and could not get it to work so i exchanged it for a better one and again no luck tried everything .so i decided to take my ps3 apart and found that one of the small pins in the back of hdmi port was pushed right in causing it not too make contact i used a small screw driver to push it back into place .after i put the ps3 together it worked perfectly .just thought i would say that only try this if you feel confident you can because you need to take the whole machine apart to get to the back of the hdmi port i did this because my machine was out of warrenty

Hey Badgeman

- I dont know if this was posted below, didn't have the time to check as I'm in a hurry, an I'm also sure to forget writing this if I come back later. I had the same problem as you, I tried alot of stuff, some solutions from this thread even, none of them worked, I know this post is old but for people that google this like I did, they should try this too. I turned on my telly, switched to the HDMI-channel my cable was plugged into, turned on my ps3 and pressed to, cd-eject key to get my bluraydisc out, and from that it was all cheesecrackerbuttersliding.

Hi everyone, if the advice below did not work, do the following:

  1. connect machine using the stock red, yellow, white cable that came from ps3. If you get audio and video then:
  2. backup your system (if you don't want to loose anything in your PS3 harddrive)
  3. Go to systems and then reformat harddrive.
  4. Plug back in HDMI cable and switch TV to HDMI output. It should then work. Hope this helps and only recommend if all else failed as you will need to reload and reupdate everything once done.

Kjones555 here's what you need to do.If you check out my youtube video I have already posted the same message over there.

1) Try with two different playstation 3'es on the same TV that doesnt Work.
If they both show "NO SIGNAL", then do the following,

Try both of them on another television.. if the image shows with both PS3's on another TV,
then it is your 50" plasma's HDMI Board that is defect.

I found out it was my SOny bravia (Brand new) which had a defect hDMI PORT, by testing it with 2 ps3's (just to be sure). Both Playstations worked perfect on other LCDS.

So I sent it to Sony and they changed the main board inside it and it works perfect today.

Test the TV with 2 PS'3s with different HDMI Cables,
and then test them on another TV. Its the only way to be 100% sure.

I don't know if someone else post this solution sorry I didn't read everithing but I have the same problem, my HDMI works fine, but some day it didn't, I have a Bravia KDL-46V5100 too brand new and my PS3 Didn´t work with any thing, and belive me I tried everything, --restore -format -push 5 seconds. -turn on PS3 and then hold off until my PS3 get off again and then turn it on but holding again until I hear 2 beeps then connect the control and put all the option it appear (obvious my RCA cable was connected and all doing it by RCA)and nothing. -etc.
The only thing that works for me was
to turn off my PS3 and my tv, unplug both wait for 15min, then plug to wall my PS3, switch the main power from the back of the PS3, when the red light is on, power on the PS3
-Then plug to the wall my TV and turn it on and voilá!! it works, something in the bravia (I think that in other Brand works the same way) resets something and it recognize the HDMI from default.
Really I was desesperated coz I was playing in HDMI and sudenlly it stops displayng in HDM (sorry if my english is confuse but I'm from México living in México )

Hi folks I had the same exact problem exept me it happened while playing... the picture started to pixelize and to blink :S after 2 hours of playing... I've tried all the previous solutions and still didin't work. My PS3 was still garanteed and I finally shipped it to Sony.. and they finded out that the HDMI output socket was malfunctionning... maybe due to ''overheating'' or it even desoldered/dewelded from the PS3 mainboard.. whatever now it works fine... probably a weak assembly by Sony... go figure lol

All I have to say it that if you've tried EVERYthing from the previous posts to make it work and it still dosen't and that your warranty is over, take your PS3 to any Audio/Video repair shop, they'll change the HDMI output socket and/or weld it to the mainboard and VOILà! costs around 60$ to 150$ depending on if he has to replace the socket.

Hi Badgeman,

I repair PS3 Consoles and other Video games, It is apparent to me that you have what is ailing many of the PS3 systems, I am finding the HDMI socket is poorly soldered, and not well supported mechanically. I believe your HDMI socket need to be resoldered. Probably on both your PS3 Consoles. This is common. My service in the USA, and I do not believe it is reasonable for me to repair your PS3 since Shipping and all prohibits the service.

Make sure you don't leave it on after playing. And that you don't take the HDMI cable out. If you leave the PS3 console on for too long then the T.V won't give good connection or signal.

If it's something else like game not working then makesure to put it back into it's case remember don't just leave it there lying in the sun or the sun can do something to the data to make it not work at all. Remember don't leave the game in the console for decades!!!

.01 is all we paid for the HDMI cable and when we hooked it up - it didn't work....scared. Samsung 26" lcd and Sony PS3. We did everything listed above but here's what worked:
1. With both tv and ps3 running (Not properly at this point but plugged in and turned on)
2. He Changed the "settings" on the TV to HDMI (instead of AV).
then
3. he Changed the PS3 Display Settings to HDMI
then
4. the playstation system processed the changes where we responded to the questions that were generated automatically on screen by the PS3 checking.
My 16 year old son figured all that out on his own with me sweating my 1 penny HDMI purchase (sorry for the long story but it all worked out in the end it working great - he's online playing).

SOURCE: PS3 not working thru HDMI cable

i am having the same problem, so i called the mfg. of the tv and they told me to set the PlayStation to out put 1080i and not 1080p i don't think this is possible. my tv is a Hitachi and they are sending me an update card for the tv, hopefully this will fix the problem. Apparently its a problem with the tv not being able to receive a 1080p signal
