The problem is not with the Print Head and I am not sure if the solution provider is talking about the same thing. Thsi is a Laser Printer and have no Print Head. I h ave fixed this once by cleaning the scanning are abut problem returned after few copies. It only happens when you do a copy/scan/fax not on printing. Clean the roller and the inside of the machine, asny residue on the roller will cause these black streaks. If cleaning doesn't cure the problem you will need to replace it.
Try cleaning the glass part with a glass cleaner solution with a damp cloth, but if you need instruction how to clean the inside part of it, suggesting you consult a technician or certified servicer for the product to avoid further issue. thanks for using Fixya!
The received fax is clean but when you send one out it has a black streak on it. Cool! So far so good. Makes sense because for sending, the fax scans the original document and parts of the scanning area could be dirty and so on. Therefore a black streak may appear. The same black streak would also appear when you make a copy, because the original document must also be scanned. Logical!
However for receiving faxes, the machine uses the internal memory and the print engine only, and the same applies to printing the transaction report, which comes from inside via the print engine. The scanner has no rol in either situation.
First guess is you have a bit of dirt (often white-out from people scanning corrected paper that's not quite dry) stuck on the fax scan window. This should be described pretty well in your user manual (which you can download online from brother.com).
Its also possible that there is dirt (typically loose toner) on the laser scan window (there's a laser that shines through it to get the image pattern on the drum). That window is often along the bottom of the unit under the drum/cartridge (take the cartridge out and look). The Brother manual I've seen seems to ignore this possibility.
Print streaks DO NOT mean cartridge drum replacement in many cases !!
On brother Intellifax or MFC or other laser copier/printer/fax, keep in mind that either the fax/copy
scan window OR the laser scan window can get dirty. If the fax scan
window is dirty, you see streaks on outgoing faxes and copies (but NOT
incoming faxes). If the laser scan window is dirty, you see streaks on
all prints (copies, faxes, print-from-computer).
Note also that when transporting/moving some laser copier with the toner cartridge inside, the toner can get out and make a big mess inside (including getting the laser scan window dirty). An air compressor can be usefull to blow it out. And sometimes using alcohol to clean is a BAD idea (maybe incompatible with plastic and rubber parts). A damp rag is probably fine.
Reference page 22-17 in reguards to cleaning the charge wire on the drum unit and page 22-16 for cleaning the document scanner. This is a link to your Brother MFC 8500. Hope this helps. http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users%20Manual/UM_MFC_8500_EN_1354.PDF
If the dark streak appears on printed documents, cleaning the charge wire will correct it.
lift up your adf and locate the thin piece of glass, about an 1' wide, and clean real good with rag and windex. probably white out or some foreign material on that glass.
