April, You say you are suspicious that the smoke could have originated from the motor, BUT have you confirmed it? Have you tried running a short cycle without a load to see if the spin cycle rattles the machine or whether the machine works? Watch for smoke and turn off the machine immediately if you see or smell burning. If the motor is burnt, I think replacing should not be an option but rather replacing the machine should be considered.
well is it a smell of burning rubber? maybe the belt that turns the drum has got jammed. over time these belts get loose and when a full load of clothes are washed the belt slips creating heat hence the smoke..hope this helps..
Hello Judy Ingram - From what you are describing it sounds like a motor failure or transmission failure has occurred, or at least a worn belt that is slipping. I highly recommend to not use the unit and to contact a professional to accurately diagnosis the washer and to assist with the repairs.
im guessing this is a performa? if so you may have something cought in your pump. remove the obstruction and check to make sure the pump is free, then replace the belt. the belt should seem a little loose as it needs to slip to get the machine up to speed in the spin
