Blue Screen and Computer freeze after using Memorex CD-R & DVD RW
Attempted to play a DVD +RW up to 4x and it froze up my pc. Had to restart multiple times in order to get the PC back to working order. Also tried writing to a Memorex CD-R disk (50 pack) and the same thing happened. Once I got my PC up and working the second time I tried using a different disk. Movies play fine, and music plays fine, I was also able to write to a Sony Disk and no problems. Is there any special driver or software needed to use these Memorex disks? I have checked for updates on the firmware on my machine and HP diagnosed no problems on the PC and no need to upgrade any firmware. Any ideas?
Re: Blue Screen and Computer freeze after using Memorex...
Is it possible to try this drive in another PC? My recommendatoin, if the drive performs to specs in the other PC, would be to perform a System Restore (not the XP one, but rather the one that uses the HP disks). If you do decide to do the restore, be sure to backup anything that is irreplacable as the restore will put your system back to factory settings.

"This model of computer does not have a blu-ray drive unless you got a third party upgrade. In this case, you will need to track down special drivers, which can best be done by whomever sold you the drive.
Some DVD recorders cannot write CD-RW - only DVD-RW (+ and -) as well as DVD-R (+ and -) (this depends on the brand/model). This unit probably does not support CD recording. Try using DVD-RW instead for this machine - see if it records that (do not finalise even if unit prompts you to with an on-screen message prior to ejecting disc).
There are DVD players and recorders which can play CD-RW (mp3, jpegs etc.) but I don't know of any which record this format (a PC CD/DVD-ROM drive can do this though).
Below is a list of discs that should or should not be used with the DVD recorders.
4x can be used
8x will result in a disc error.
2x can be used
4x will result in a disc error.
The following discs have been tested and are proven to be compatible with our DVD recorders.
IMATION DVD-R 2.0
TDK DVD-RW 2X
TDK DVD-R 2X
The following are brands of discs we DO NOT recommend:
TDK DVD-RW 4x
TDK DVD-R 4x
Please be aware that a free software upgrade is now available to customers. This upgrade will enable your unit to recognize the (DVD-R 8x) discs. To obtain a copy, please call 1-800-242-7158. Customer service by phone is available 7 days a week 6:00am to 9:00pm pacific time.
In order to receive the upgrade we need to know what firmware version your unit requires. First you need to access the DVD recorders service mode. Turn on the DVD Recorder and the Television, make sure the unit is on the DVD side. You may access the service mode by pressing the CMSKIP button on the remote control. Once you press CMSKIP you must press the numbers 1,2,3. You must do this quickly so it may take a couple tries. The model name will appear on the screen followed by Firmware Version. I need to know the serial number next to FE: Press the RETURN button to exit screen.

If you are asking for the information regarding the ODD here it is: DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) with Labelflash? drive supporting 11 formats * Maximum speed and compatibility: CD-ROM (24x), CD-R (24x), CD-RW (4x), DVD-ROM (8x), DVD-R (Single Layer, (8x)), DVDR (Double Layer, (4x)), DVD-RW (4x), DVD+R (Single Layer, (8x)), DVD+R (Double Layer, (4x)), DVD+RW (4x), DVD-RAM (5x) * Supports Labelflash? media to burn high quality labels directly on the disk. If not ( Cant read CD or DVD ) then most likely the lens on the ODD is already busted. or ODD cant be detected then just go to the Website support.toshiba.com and download the latest update for the ODD. And install the driver on your NB and restart the NB. If still the same then the ODD you have is already busted what you need to do is to buy a new ODD.

Nero 6 and 7 does not provides us the facilitiy of burning the DVD in appropriate DVD Format. Instead it burns the DVD in the normal DATA Format, which is not supportable by our DVD Player. To play the DVD in our DVD Player we should burn the DVD in the appropriate DVD Burner which itself converts the extension of the movie and make it proper for a DVD Player to read it. It also adds some files to the DVD which is sometimes used by the dvd player in running the DVD.
