When I set my function to auto or manual the viewscreen goes black. I can still take a picture but I have to look through the little viewfinder to position it.

The viewscreen won't turn on until after you take a picture

You accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press this button one more time.

Overexposed photos??

The view finder "going black" on an SLR is caused by the mirror being up, which is also when the camera is actually taking the picture! The mirror sends the light from the lens to either the viewfinder or the sensor. When it's down, the light goes to the viewfinder and you can compose the picture. When you press the shutter release, the mirror comes up, and light goes to the sensor. In a film SLR, there was a shutter just in front of the film that controlled the amount of light that hit the film. In your D80, it's a combination of the mirror and the electronics that set "shutter speed".

What is happening when you get these white pictures is that somehow your settings are holding the mirror open far longer than it should be open. When you turn off the camera, it drops the mirror automatically. If you are in S or M, it's because you've set your shutter speed improperly. If it's doing this in Auto mode, then there may be a problem with the exposure meter or the lens.

If you describe more about when it happens (shutter speed settings, Auto or manual mode) I can probably tell you if it's your settings or the camera/lens.

My canon rebel xti is broken?

This will happen if you have the camera set to manual and the aperture/shutter speed combination does not let in enough light. There's a wheel on the top of the camera with M, A, S, P, Auto settings - turn the wheel to select P or Auto and try again.
Also, if you're indoors, you may have to use the flash.

Black LCD and Viewfinder

I have the similar problem as above...Canon 5D

When camera is turned on the viewfinder is black. All other functions appear to be working correctly. I can view pictures on the card. I take a picture and it views on the screen and the spec's come up on the botton of the view finder but the viewfinder is 90 black with a bit of blur. Is this the censor or a mirror...?

Is this fixable and at what approximate cost? Would it be cheaper to replace?

Distorted Viewfinder Only In PIcture Mode

Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail. Get in touch with an expert camera repairer.
