Question about Onkyo TX-SR605 Receiver
I have the following setup:
XBOX360 Premium HDMI
Panasonic BD HDMI
Virgin V+ HDMI
Nintendo Wii YRW
HDMI to Toshiba 42" LCD
During playback or V+ / BD content, or using the Wii everything is fine.
However, from time to time when watching HD-DVD through the Xbox the screen and sound flickers as if the amp can't cope, and when playing games, the receiver occasionally turns off (which normally causes the xbox to complain about loss of input, so it resets).
This problem did not exist for at least 4 months of use, I found the first time this had happened that a certain frequency of bass was causing a loose wire to touch the speaker case, after fixing this in everything was fine. But it's started to happen again, but there are no loose cables, all of the HDMI cable are new / gold plated, and it appears at the moment that this only happens when using Xbox Live too (strangely).
I've not been able to find anything similar on any of the forums, so if anyone has had similar problems or knows how to resolve this, it would be greatly appreciated to hear from you.

You have said the correct thing HDMI is digital therefore Analog will not pass.
You might have RCA audio outputs on your cable box so either send them into the TV from cable or into the AMP then use AMP volume to listen to TV audio (select unused input and remember it is for TV) the key is to remember that cable box will drive the initial vol so raise or lower cable vol then use AMP vol to obtain desired volume.

The connection order can be a key issue as to whether or not the HDMI
signals will pass through the system. For best results the receiver
should be turned on first, then the source device(s) and then the
display. The reason for this has to do with getting the equipment to
handshake properly for the HDCP protocol.
If HDMI video will not pass through your receiver, you may with to just connect the xbox using the component cables. Since component will pass through 720p and your TV is 1080i you should expect the same qualtiy and a more crisp picture.

This might somewhat help. Today I went back .. I went HDMI out of the Cable box and DVD player into 2 of the TVs HDMI ins. The digital audio out from each, straight to the receiver and things are working ok. All speakers are working OK. Sound isnt as loud or crisp but unfortunately I found no other solution.

Not sure if this is your fix, but I had what I thought was the same problem. I played with my Onkyo quite a bit ensuring the correct assignments for HDMI, audio and all that stuff. Turns out I neglected to make sure the output devices were properly assigned. Many devices aren't default to output sound over HDMI. I changed the audio out settings on the cable box to HDMI and suddenly the Onkyo worked great. I know, I'm an idiot for not checking that in the first place, but maybe someone out there is having the same trouble as well.

Onkyo service told me, the second timethat I called them, that there is a known HDMI handshake issue with Motorola and Atlanta Scientific cable boxes. The only solution, and it was a solution, is to connect the box through the HDMI 1 port ONLY. All the other (2,3,4) result in blinking/dropping of signal. I did this, changed the cable/satelilte setting to HDMI 1 and all is well.
