Posessed TV! All right, so was just sitting watching the news and the tv shut off. After a few minutes it came back on for 10 minutes.
Checked the front, did the whole foil over the sensor, batteries, unplug and letting sit a while.
It remained off after re-plugging in and then started a somewhat vicious cycle of scanning for channels and turning off and back on repeatedly.
Opened the front, checked everything, checked the power supply (Grandfather repaired TVs so I ran through his checklist) and still turns on and off randomly.
The only thing was a while after removing the batteries the cycle stopped. However, it picked back up a little while later.
Any suggestion on what I should try next or if I should seriously just trash and get a new tv?

The lamp may be starting to go, the symptoms you describe are classic warning signs. You could unplug tv let it cool down and check lamp most likely the glass will not look clear maybe a little milky or smoky in areas..dead give away.
Ive seen this before...that may be indicative of an upgrade of the software in the cable box that comes from your cable provider. The best thing to do is plug it back in, let it get the "yellow ring" for a bit, and wait for the upgrade (it make take 10 - 15 minutes). Then things should return to normal... If the condition persists, try to call the cable company.
Hi tigerhell,
The bad news is the problem is almost always a malfunction internal to the tv, it is sometimes caused by electrostatic discharge from carpet and touching the control panel on the tv. Have you recently been zapped when you touched a button?
The good news is that the TV should still be under warranty, Sony has a good repair or exchange policy, you should also look into the return policy of the merchant you bought it from. You may be able to take it to the store and exchange it.

The problem is in your cable connection on the back of your monitor or Box. I had the same problem and solved it by reattaching the VGA cable that was loose.
