Gah, same problem. Specifying "Tray 1" does not work.

Same problem here. For a moment I had lost faith in my 10+ year old Brother 5250DN. Yep, paper stuck inside. Brother lasers are the BEST printers in the world!

I had the same problem on 4 Brother HL-5250's, I checked the whole printer, and couldn't find a paper jam, yet the red printer light wouldn't shut off. I finally followed the instructions on Brother's website for removing a paper jam, and the solution for all 4 printers was paper stuck in the fuser cover. See below on how to open the fuser cover.

Pull the tabs at the left and right hand sides toward you to open the fuser cover (1).

  2. Hint
  3. There are 2 kinds of covers at the rear of the printer. Please make sure to open both the back cover (step 7) and the fuser cover (step8).
Here's the link from HP, on how to open the Fuser Cover.

I had the same problem. I looked for all possible paper jams, then opened the back and pushed the little levers in to release a flipper unit near the drum. Voila, next to the drum was a crinkled sheet of paper. The green light is back on and duplex printing is working!

I had found that strangely some Word documents failed to print and would constantly make the "no paper" warning come on even when there was loads of paper and no paper jams I could find. Then I discovered that in the Word document (in File > Page Setup > Paper) the offending documents "manual" in the paper source for the first and or other pages. If I change these to default/auto select then bingo it prints. I guess if you have it set to manual, the printer is waiting for you to manually feed it a sheet of paper from other than the paper tray.

Here's another wrinkle re. Solutions 2 and 3. All the settings per above were ok, but in trying to print an envelope from the auxiliary tray, it gave the paper error. After investigating a bit, I noticed that the printer was set for "duplex" printing (left over from a previous document). Duplex is incompatible with auxiliary tray printing, and instead of saying so, it just gives the "paper" error.

HI. My printer just did the same thing it was driving me crazy. I called Brothers tech support. The document you were trying to print sent your printer into the manual feed option. Bring up the document you're trying to print. Click on File then Print Setup. Click on Paper and change the setting to Tray 1 (if more than one page change in both columns) Then press OK. Press print and it will print for you. Tech said they dont know why some documents are doing this but it works every time. Good Luck!

My paper keeps jamming after I changed the drum of my printer in my Brother HL-5250DN printer-- it seems that I touched something when I did so.

1. Unplug the printer.
2. Remove the drum.
3. Make sure there are no obstructions. Check for pieces of paper obstructing the feed and any small objects such as torn paper or even a stray fingernail.
4. Replace the drum.
5. Plug in the printer.
6. Attempt to print again.

Hi - I have a Brother HL5250DN with the paper light flashing but there is paper in the tray and now it wont print - can you help??

Is the Status light also red? This could mean other things than being out of paper. It could be a paper jam (most commonly anyway). Get a flashlight out and inspect it for jams.

I just bought a new Dell with Windows 7. Installed the updated driver from brother. Printer worked OK. As a page was feeding back into the machine it got stuck. I removed the page. But since then the paper...

This could mean that the printer is expecting paper of a particular size (for duplex printing). Press the job cancel button and check that the paper size is set for the correct paper type (A4, Letter or Legal). That light will also blink if the back cover is open or the duplex tray is not installed.

My Brother HL 5250DN jams frequently when I try and duplex print. I have had no problems for over a year, but then it started jamming.

Paper dust/particles tend to accumulate on rubber rollers and they lose their grip (friction) of the paper.
Try to open every door and wherever any rubber rollers are visible, larger or smaller, clean them with isopropyl alcohol or some other oil-free and residue-free cleaner. Do it with the printer switched off the mains power, this should allow you to rotate the rollers to clean them all around.
Should help.

After reloading paper in my HL-5250DN, it will not print . The flashing yellow light is on, and there is not a paper jam.

I usually find that when this happens the paper jam is in the back part of the printer. Open the back lid (opposite side from the logo) and check in there. It may take a bit of force since that window is not open often. If that doesn't help, power down, keep off for 30 sec, and power back up.

You may also want to make sure that your printer tray on your computer is not frozen -- it may failed to release the spooled pages, etc., depending on when it froze.

If it's the same as my Hl-5250DN, you have to use MP Tray mode. The MP (multi-purpose) tray is cleverly hidden on the front of my printer.
